Israel Attacked and its Response

Remember that gandolfini movie about a military prison where the whole climax was around whether or not Robert Redford was gonna fly the American flag upside down

I didn’t want this thread to get derailed talking about biff, or about college protestors. Right now in our national discourse we are being completely distracted by the alleged antisemitism of the protests or the fascism of police crack downs. The police and government crack down on nearly all protests, and all support of Palestine is smeared as antisemitism. I feel like we should hold space in our brains for thinking about Palestinians, without needing to connect it to something happening here, to us.

But isn't one of the goals of protesting to connect struggles facing one community to the larger world?

That’s a good question. I don’t know. My opinion is informed by listening to a couple of interviews yesterday at college protests where the interviewees worked hard to steer the conversation to conditions in Gaza, instead of talking about the protests themselves. It stands to reason that the point of a protest isn’t to talk about the protest (besides the goal of the protest) - American culture just happens to be very authoritarian, so anti-authoritarian actions are very interesting.

No. It means that you have conquered that territory and you are raising your flag.

If any of you want to try that shit in front of me in front of a public building I can guarantee you that I will not stand there and film you with my iPhone.
Were you this mad when all those Americans flew Ukrainian flags outside their houses and on their cars a year and a half ago? Did that mean those were Ukrainian homes and cars? .

I also associate many of these college protests with calls for local, institutional changes (i.e. boycotts, divestments, sanctions) that potentially could have a meaningful effect on international and private-sector support for Israel's campaign

"Now imagine the flag is white"

Oh shit. Retro-anger incoming. Back date those opinion article responses!

No.

You're not this obtuse.

You want to put a flag sticker supporting Ukraine, Hamas, or Scotland, or South Africa, or Mexico on your car, go for it. You pull down the American flag and raise another country's flag (especially one you don't know jack shit about), I have a problem with that.

So why not the Ukrainian flag?

When they removed the American Flag did they let it touch the ground because if so the cruise missiles should have been launched hours ago!

What I am asking is, why is that a problem for you? Seems like it's a line in the sand and I don't see why that is a bridge too far. It's an expression of free speech, one of the the most important things that the flag stands for. There is so much shit wrong in the world and this is what you've come to the tunnels to get worked up about so I am curious why. It's a sincere ask.
