The 2012 Official MLB Baseball Thread (Mother's basement edition)

When does BA's list of top prospects by level/affiliate come out? I am getting cised for some Sally League action.

Appel or Buxton? (That's about the extent of my knowledge of the draft.)

Most of what I've seen talks about Houston thinking big arm, so probably Appel or Zimmer or Gausman. Apparently all three are having great college seasons, and the trick will be deciding which one of the three we like best.

We actually have quite a few young outfielders already in our system, so I can't imagine we go after Buxton. Perhaps Zunino, catcher from UF, is a possibility though.

Are the Injuns going to be terrible this year? They are getting mowed down by the Shark right now, 5 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 5 Ks.

Edited to add: Also, Shark just tripled - insult, meet injury.

Edited again: Stranded after 1,2,3 hitters go ground out, foul out, pop out.

Pretty sure they do a list of qhere the top prospects for each team are headed which i threw in to excel to sort by league for him last year.

Good to know the season started and opening day is still really a week away. Damn you baseball.

Woah, Cubs ship Randy Wells to Iowa - didn't see that coming, assumed he would be in the pen at the worst.

So, Garza, Dump, Maholm, Volstad & Shark are definitely the Cubs starting 5. We have had worse.

Indians should be pretty good this year, and probably have the best chance at winning the division beside the Tigers. Think Royals are still a year or two away. Really hope Sizemore and Choo stay healthy this year as those are some key bats. Same with Travis Hafner but don't think he's moving out of DH.

The pitching should be very interesting, as they have the best ground-ball pitching team in baseball. Risked a lot as well to get Jimenez last year so it'd be nice for him to return to his ace form. Masterson's last outing wasn't great but I believe he had a pretty strong Spring Training.

I don't really understand why people are upset about it, other than A's and Mariners fans.

Side note, I went to a baseball game in Tokyo once, and they really take their cheering seriously. It was kind of like a Duke game in that they had organized cheers. There was a home section and an away section. When the home team was up to bat, everyone in the home section stood up and did their cheers for each player. Then they would sit and let the away section take over when their team was up to bat.

Also, the beer vendors were girls in neon outfits carrying mini kegs on their backs.

Apologies for the random ramblings that had little to do with your post.

Oh, agree, I am just frustrated that opening day happened and I have a week still before I can watch the Cubs - really don't care about the whole Japan thing - if it is good for the MLB and makes them money, fine. Not like I am a season ticket holder, and even if i were, not that big of deal to lose one of 81.

Shout out to my boy Erasmo Ramirez on making the Mariner's major league roster. Had a pretty BOSS spring training.

7.0 IP, 6H, 1R, 1BB, 3Ks

Where do the Sizemore and Choo contracts stand? Wouldn't be surprised to see them pilfered mid-season this year.

Bartolo Colon had an impressive stat line yesterday, albeit against the Ms. I love how he throws harder now than any other time in his career. MAGIC SURGERY.

Jair Bogaerts 1b played in the DSL last year and Xander's brother was the last piece of the theo compensation:
Red Sox get: Chris Carpenter and Aaron Kurcz
Cubs get: Theo and Jair

eta Chris Carpenter is having elbow surgery today to remove bone spurs

And the abortion is complete. Carpenter and Kurcz are ok. Kurcz is somewhere in A ball - all I know about him is they shifted to be a starter last year as he was originally supposed to be a reliever - Carpenter was ok in relief last year - nothing special about him, but he probably would have made our team this year.

Tigers optioned Andy Oliver today, back to his third stint with the Toledo Mud Hens.

Since Jacob Turner is out of the hunt now (tendonitis), the 5th starter spot is up between Drew Smyly and Duane Below. I think Smyly has better stuff and better control, but Below is the more experienced player, so he's probably got the edge now.

Phils making a move - have traded Matt Rizzotti to the Twins - haven't seen what they got back, but have to guess it is a middle infielder.

Edited: Nevermind, they just traded him for cash. Pete Orr and Freddie Galvis it is!
