2017 College Basketball Coaching Carousel (Matta out at Ohio State)

Ohio State just got turned down by Greg McDermott.

Does that in turn mean Mack & Cronin did say thanks but no thanks? I can't believe McDermott would get the offer ahead of these 2. Maybe these 3 figure they have it pretty good vs trying to match up with big boys in Big 10. They can still get to sweet 16 and beyond from where they currently are. Mack is also an alum at Xavier.

As an NCSU fan who actually witnessed us run a smooth basketball coaching search for the first time in my adult life this brings me great joy.

Can't believe Gene Smith (OSU AD) fired Matta at this late date without some back channel assurances that at least one desirable candidate would take the job. That's just elementary. If Matta wanted to stay and Smith couldn't get a better candidate to commit through his agent prior tot he Matta firing, Gene Smith was negligent, and he has permanently damaged his program by the move to fire Matta just assuming that he could land a strong coach. What an f-up!

Sounds like they are going to hire Holtmann from Butler.

If true, Pilch may have spoken too soon. OSU can afford to do things other schools can't.

Sounds like Holtmann to Ohio State is official. 8-year deal, $3M per season.

That hurts O$U. Getting the guy from Butler or X is harder now that they are in the new BE unless O$U breaks the bank to offer $4M+/year.

Less than 24 hours later, Gene Smith begs to differ.

He took $1M less than I thought. Wow, that's a big one.

Holtmann's career coaching path is interesting.

He played college hoop at an NAIA school, Taylor University in KY. He was teammates at Taylor with John Groce. When Groce got the Ohio U job, Groce hired Holtmann as an assistant. Holtmann then got the Gardner-Webb head job when Groce got the Illinois head job, and Holtmann coached at G-W for three years. He had losing records his first two years at G-W, but his third year, G-W finished 2nd in the Big South, and the G-W made the CIT tourney. Holtmann then left as head coach at G-W to become an assistant under Brandon Miller at Butler, which seemed like kind of a weird move at the time to become an assistant again while he appeared to building G-W. Miller had replaced Brad Stevens at Butler, and during the 2014-5 season, Miller had to take a leave of absence at Butler, which to this day has never been fully explained.

Holtmann as Miller's top assistant was named interim head coach in the middle of the 2014-5 season. Before that season ended, Butler removed the interim tag, and Holtmann was named Butler head coach. Butler made the NCAAs during each of the past 3 seasons under Holtmann. Now, within months after Groce was fired by Illinois, Holtmann is the tOSU head coach, and has a big fat contract.

Will be interesting to see who succeeds him at Butler. At some point that program has to run out of luck and hire a below average coach.
