2018-2019 NHL Thread – Thunderstorm Warning

The likeness is uncanny.

Tragic discovery, apparently my work has blocked a bunch of new sites, including sportsnet.ca. I can't read 30 Thoughts at work anymore!

Joel Ward returns to the Verizon Center tonight. And Ovi is out for personal reasons.

Larkin has been on the ice for all but one of Detroit's goals this season. Defensively he looks fucking clueless, but he's magic with Zetterberg.

This was reviewed and declared not a good goal because of goalie interference:

I'd like to see a different angle, but I think Beagle interfered with Jones' stick as he went in front. That is the only reason I can think of for it to be called.

Overhead angle about halfway through this video: https://streamable.com/qv1v?t=0.0

Well, Beagle is definitely in contact with Jones as he tries to make the save, but you could argue that the contact didn't affect Jones' ability to make the save. Beagle also cut in very close to Jones and made no effort to avoid him. Ultimately, in a 5-0 game, it didn't matter, but I can see the justification for a call there.

Happy Kimmo Timonen Day!

NHL GMs whining ‘bloody murder’ over Mike Richards contract settlement

With the agreement, Richards’ cash lasts until the end of 2030-31 campaign. As part of a cap-recapture penalty due to decreasing dollar values towards the end of his contract, the Kings lose $1.32M from their cap this year — and the next four — with the settlement amount added to that total. Starting in 2020-21, the team’s only penalty is the settlement itself — and that’s not a high number, believed to be somewhere in the $550,000 per season range on average.

I hate how Dean Lombardi handled this situation, but I love it when GMs get angry. I bet Brian Burke is super pissed.

I'd like to thank Townie for not choosing my team. Jinx-city. Poor Bob.

Neuvirth follows his shutout of Florida with a shutout of the defending champs.

Edit: half the teams in the Metro have yet to earn a point in the standings.

Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin says he overslept and missed practice Tuesday morning, and that's why coach Barry Trotz made him sit out that night's game against San Jose Sharks.

The Capitals said on Tuesday that Ovechkin missed the game for "personal reasons." Ovechkin spoke to reporters after Wednesday's practice, saying he made a mistake setting his alarm clock.

He set the alarm clock for 8:30 p.m. instead of a.m., which caused him to oversleep and arrive at practice late. Ovechkin said Trotz then told the Capitals captain he would not play in the game for violating team rules.

So there's still hope for Caroliahahahahahahaha yeah I can't even type it out.

Stars/Lightening tonight was awesome. Just what you'd expect from the top 2 scoring teams last year.

Canes start a 7 game road trip tonight in Detroit. They're in Washington tomorrow night.

I know the schedule will even out, but the Caps have been extraordinarily lucky so far. 3 of first 4 opponents have been on their second night of a back-to-back.

Not NHL related but since there are not multiple hockey threads (I'm looking at you soccer people), I might as well post the pretty cool story/video of the 94yo hockey player on this thread.
