British Open

Congrats to Caturday's boy. Played great this week. Ridiculous how well/long he hits that 3 wood.

I get people not being a Fowler fan because he often looks like a donk, but seems like he has some legit haters which makes little sense to me. 3 top Top 5 (and 2 T2) major finishes in a row.

Re: Ryder Cup. Despite a bad year, Phil is still 11th in points. Think he is on the team (and Tiger is out) if Watson had to make his picks today. Just 3 tournaments left (Canada, WGC and PGA)for players to make the Top 9 in points.

THIS WEEK LAST WEEK EVENTS POINTS

1 1 Bubba Watson 19 6,828.138
2 2 Jimmy Walker 23 5,510.205
3 7 Rickie Fowler 24 5,403.253
4 6 Jim Furyk 18 5,259.594
5 3 Dustin Johnson 20 5,133.806
6 5 Jordan Spieth 24 4,781.828
7 4 Matt Kuchar 22 4,764.065
8 8 Jason Dufner 19 3,516.345
9 9 Zach Johnson 24 3,450.894
10 10 Patrick Reed 21 3,301.393

11 12 Phil Mickelson 20 3,252.839
12 11 Brendon Todd 23 3,250.482
13 14 Chris Kirk 23 3,226.882
14 17 Ryan Moore 23 3,118.871
15 13 Webb Simpson 22 3,086.070
16 18 Keegan Bradley 25 3,016.697

Think right now Watson goes Phil, B. Todd and Keegan.

Religion may play a part in some people disliking Fowler. Some say he's boring though as well. I don't really have any feelings one way or the other on Fowler. Good golfer, on top of his game right now, and likely to break through and win a major sometime soon. Top 5 in the first three majors - hell of a season so far. Similarly Furyk is having a hell of a year.

Well, the Oklahoma State thing isn't going to endear him to WF fans. The caterpillar on the lip and looking like a 5-yr old who is running around wearing his dad's too-big-for-me hat and the fashion-show thing is annoying. But he's certainly a likeable player in terms of attitude and on-course composure. Being liked by fellow golfers says a lot for a player. Fowler is that it seems.

This, and what Cav said as to Fowler. Used to really dislike him because he looked ridiculous and got WAY more attention than his game deserved. But the last year or 2 of actually getting a win and performing well in majors has mellowed me on him and increased my respect for him.

I would love to know why they pick American style courses. Maybe because most of their players live in Jupiter Florida and belong to Medalist.

Hope Furyk kicks ass in what will probably be his final Ryder Cup.

Rankings of recent Ryder Cuppers not in the top 16:
Woods #70
Stricker #39
Mahan #34
Snedeker #28

Haas is #27. Really hope he can do something over the next 3 weeks to make his 1st Ryder Cup.

The Cup is being played at Gleneagles, which the Scots refer to as an "American course". It is in the middle of the country.

Yeah, I don't get the Gleneagles selection. If you're gonna play it in Scotland, why not play it on a links course? Unless the Euro powers that be think the top Americans are better at links golf. Which I don't think is the case, because of the top Americans, only Phil, Dustin and Ricky have distinguished themselves at the Open.

It looks like a course out of Florida. Playing Gleneagles in Scotland for the Ryder Cup is idiotic.

Aren't most of the hardcore Fowler fans his age or younger? Don't see how it's a bad thing the golf is trying to market the hell out of its sport to a younger generation. Seems like the popularity of the game has really faded among younger people (not talking TV ratings, just people playing the game).

He is one of my top 3 golfers. What is not to like? Turned down a professional motocross career to be a pro golfer - awesome. I love the bright orange. But 2010 Ryder Cup is where he really won me over. Four birdies in the last four holes to halve the match. Had he lost, the Euros would have won the Cup. Unfortunately, Mahan made sure that happened anyway. But Fowler's close out of those holes was amazing.

He played like a one-armed wall paper hanger the rest of that Ryder Cup.

I don't like him because he's been all style and no substance for most of his career. Far more worried about enhancing his brand than winning golf tournaments, but at least now he's starting to show some serious game to go along with his marketing side. He needs to start winning some.

I've never played the PGA Centenary Course, where the matches will be held. I've played the King's Course and the Queen's Course, both of which have a lot more elevation change than a Florida course. But they are definitely American style courses.

The RC is being played at this course because 1. it normally hosts the Johnny Walker Championship on the Euro Tour and 2. Pretty sure the Euro PGA owns the course

Sorry if already covered but anyone see a report on what happened on the 16th tee after Rory hit his drive ? Rare to see a player react like that so it must have been serious....walking over to the crowd and pointing out a guy to security folks and then a brief shot of a guy in the arms of 4 cops. As he left the tee, Rory several times looked back and side to side obviously destracted. From that point on he was visibly being closely escorted by 6 to 8 security guards.

BTW, there seemed to be an unusually large number of people and photo media types inside the ropes during this tourney....a little worrisome IMO.

Speaking of fans, color me unimpressed with the Liverpudlians yesterday this week. Not the worst (US Open) but they were working on it. On the one hand you have to enjoy the way they embraced Watson no matter how he's playing, each time he walks up 18. He can do no wrong and it's fantastic. On the other hand, you have the cellphone bullshit and the jackass who apparently had been heckling Rory all day until he had enough at 16 and got the dickhead tossed. My question is how does it last until 16? How aren't the Rory fans in the gallery putting a foot in this clown's ass before then. Just another reason the galleries and patrons at Augusta set the standard.

Dude had been doing it all tourney.

Not sure how fair that is. Didn't love the flash before he started playing well, but at this point he's more than backed it up. Consider:

1) He earned his card through Q-school in 2010. Not by a fluke finish or exemptions.
2) He had 3 runner-ups as rookie of the year and was the youngest US player in Ryder Cup history.
3) 2011 was his "no substance" year, but he still beat McIlroy to win the Korean Open then broke through in 2012.
4) Since earning a spot in all the majors halfway through his 2010 season, he's played in 17 majors and has 5 top 10's with only 3 missed cuts.

That's a pretty high bar for "all style and no substance for most of his career." And I'm not really a Fowler fan...

someone on another board mentioned that the person removed had been heckling Rory for most of his round.
