There are many laws to prevent people from making shrewd moves that give themselves a short term benefit that could harm others.

Paying off the porn star was fine and not illegal and obviously prudent if you you’re running for POTUS. If Pecker and Cohen had just run this thing through some small shadowy PAC, no one would have found out for years at least.

And people forget about the unrelated tax evasion that Cohen was engaged in that really got him in a bunch of trouble.
 
Here's what Cohen actually pled guilty to.

He was facing 55 years max for the tax evasion and false statements. 10 years for the campaign finance stuff. This was a Federal case in which Trump has not been charged. Trump's not even charged with either of the campaign finance violations, and presumably won't be. Yet, the State of NY's case hinges on that alleged, uncharged crime. IANAL, but that looks like a weak ass case to me. And even if he's convicted, what's the punishment supposed to be ? Trump's not going to fail for some bullshit invoices.

So Trump wasn't federally charged while he was President and Barr was head of the DOJ? I wonder how that would have all gone down.
