Keys to Victory: APP STATE

Not sure Freudenthal is/was a walk-on. Walk-ons don't redshirt to my knowledge and Freudenthal did. Nor does media guide indicate walk-on when it usu. does.

He was a preferred walk-on. Just like James Sriraman

No resson not to redshirt walkons if they dont play as frosh. They dont use scholarship space. They may well contribute more as 5th yr. Srs. I don't see any downside to doing it.

There's not, to my understanding. It was just my impression that previously they didn't classify walk-ons as "redshirt x's". I could be wrong this is all just my now hazy memory from the last times I recall looking up walk-ons in the media guide. If so, maybe because when paying your own way walk-ons weren't as inclined to stay 5yrs to play 4.

I think it's better stated that they get five years in the program if they can play.

BTW, doubt this is a revelation to anyone but in pregame w/u's, Weaver was nailing 52 and 55 yard FG's ( no wind )....with ease.

Yet his game KO's, save for 1, all were fielded between the 5 and goal line....go figure.

Do you think he was trying to kick touchbacks or trying to kick between the 5 and GL taking the chance we would tackle the return guy inside the 25?

Didn't Maggio handle at least one kickoff?

liveanddie, Wake should never do that. Just take the 25. If Weaver was trying to do it, he would have popped it up more. He didn't.

Yeah, I agree with that. We don't cover well enough.

What's the deal with Adam Centers? Wasn't he supposed to have the big leg for kick offs? I know he was hurt last year, but I don't even think he's the backup right now.

Edit: I guess he's gone, not listed on the roster. The first radio show this year, Centers was mentioned in a question and they didn't say he wasn't on the team any more?

We actually cover very well so far this year. I think it's a strategy that we are kicking between the goal and five-yard line and it's worked well thus far.

Something to keep an eye on.

We are allowing 21.38 yards per return on kickoffs this year. That places us short of the 25 yard line thus far. As we play against better competition it may not be as good of a strategy, but last year we had touchbacks on 50% of our kickoffs and this year we have a touchback on 1/13. I definitely think it's a strategy, as it's highly doubtful that Weaver just lost leg strength from last year to this year.

This strategy isn't working then. Here is the BC drive chart.

We only stopped them behind the 25 3 times out of 7 kickoffs and those were on the 22 and 23. We allowed one big return.

We haven't allowed a kick return touchdown since 11.9.13 (Florida State). Impressive streak.

That would be an interesting question to ask Clawson.

I am guessing that it may be done to get our special teams some practice covering downfield in games. If you are only getting touchbacks on 50% of your kicks (from last year's sample size), then you might as well get some additional practice early in the season.

It also could have been weather related. The wind was swirling a bit in the stadium in Boston, and it was raining against Presbyterian. Would be interesting to hear Clawson's thoughts on that.

I think teams have caught on to this strategy, and are focusing more on kickoff return blocking. tOSU has been doing it for around 3 years now, and it used to be super effective, downing teams inside the 20 almost every time. Now, I think it's starting to backfire, even for them.

What year did FSU absolutely destroy us in the field position game with coffin corner kick-offs?

Pretty much every year, but I think 2012 is the year you are thinking of. We returned 7 kickoffs for a total of 102 yards (14.5 yards per return). Even if we caught all of them at the 5 then we averaged starting behind the 20 yard line.
