NHL Thread

Related to Colton boarding Hughes and crosschecking Timo in the face? I fell asleep on the couch sometime during the game and didn't follow the action closely.

Have you been following the Blues (or anyone else in particular) lately?
Yeah. I don’t think i ended up seeing any fights but thought they would as everyone seemed hot. I haven’t watched as much as i wanted with nba starting.

Really awesome piece from The Athletic today: The shortest career in NHL history? 1 shift. 4 seconds. 0 regrets

Here's the intro:

Late in the first period, Greg Koehler rose from the Hurricanes bench. He flung his legs over the boards and, for the first time, propelled himself into the heart of NHL action. The moment his left skate hit the ice, a dream was realized. It was Dec. 29, 2000, and he was a big leaguer.

Sitting on the bench most of the period had given Koehler time to take in his surroundings at Columbus’ Nationwide Arena and settle his nerves. By the time he went on for his first shift, he was clear-headed, hungry to show he belonged. He skated forward, crossing the GMC logo in front of the bench before turning toward the offensive zone. Carolina’s Ron Francis, a few strides ahead, raced toward a loose puck in the corner. Koehler followed, his eyes up in anticipation for a pass from his captain. It took eight strides for him to cross the blue line.

“Oh, there he is!” shouted his mom, Cathy Koehler, watching on TV from the family home in Scarborough, Ontario.

But as Koehler reached Carolina’s offensive zone, Blue Jackets forward Steve Heinze’s stick hooked around Francis. The veteran crashed to the ice and slid into the wall. An official blew his whistle immediately. It was a clear-cut penalty.

“Ah, f—,” Koehler thought to himself and instantly turned toward the bench. He wasn’t on Carolina’s power play unit, so he knew his shift was over. There had been other moments in the period Koehler had been ready to take the ice, but something always seemed to get in the way, be it a penalty or a teammate not heading to the bench for a line change.

“Sorry, kid,” Carolina coach Paul Maurice said, looking down the bench toward his new forward. “I’m trying.”

The game stayed tight the rest of the evening. With Carolina chasing the lead against the expansion Blue Jackets, Maurice never called Koehler’s name again. He didn’t get back on the ice. Not that day, and never again in an NHL game.

After four seconds and eight strides, his NHL career was over. His stick never touched the puck.

Close call must have been that GK the Canes stuck between the pipes a few years back a few seconds from the end of the game. Practice GK/equipment guy or something?

David Ayres actually saved a win when he came in and was Toronto's building operator/emergency goalie at the time.

There was a different situation that I think he was referring to, I just don’t remember any details about it

So....you guys know I'm a dork/nerd/geek/whatever....and I like to play video games and mess with spreadsheets and fiddle with data and stuff....

Well, like I said recently, I bought NHL 24...and I thought it would be fun to create a Custom League.....in it, I placed all 8 of our Fantasy teams....so it's an 8-team Custom League with our fantasy rosters (as they were yesterday, so any changes made today aren't included)

I'm going to simulate the entire season and see how it all turns out. (For Robert Reinhard's Swell Team, I had to add a skater because you had to have 18 skaters on the team and you didn't at that time, so I just went back and picked the last player you dropped, J. Gaudreau.)

I chose random city names that sounded funny for each of us.

Here's the setup (The lines were CPU created and some people had too few D or F and I think it mainly takes "Chemistry" into account, so they may look a little weird):

We're playing a 12-round Round Robin schedule, so everybody playes each other 12 times (6H/6A) for a total of 84 games....so it should be a pretty accurate representation of how good our teams are.

I have no idea how it will handle injuries...I think there are AHL teams assigned to each team, so it will probably just call players up.

[EDIT: After simulating a month, it looks like it's calling up AHL players too, so it won't be perfect, but oh well]

I'll update every 12-14 games or so with standings and stats.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Back to real life, Sens are blowing up Toronto!

3 goals in like 2-3 minutes.

Stutzle with 4 points (yay fantasy team!), Chychrun with 1G/1A including a PPP.

9.1 pts between them! GO SENS!

Some notes:

Bart's Majesty's T. Thompson suffered a Broken Leg and is out until January 14th, 2024

There are a couple of other injuries, but none more than 2-3 weeks.

The schedule is so weird, IDK why they couldn't balance it out more, but in the month of October, my team played HailToTheDeacons 4 times in 5 games, and Rein's Swell 5 times out of 11 and I haven't played Howta Dougie (play him 5 out of next 12).....I don't see why it wouldn't be a max of 3 games/month against all the other teams.

But I guess that's why I'm doing so well and HTTD is doing so terrible, because I have the much better team.

:troll:

The Sharks have won two straight, and the Oilers are tied for DFL in the NHL  Edmonton outshot San Jose 41-18.

Also, Cole Caufield bagged another GWOTG. He's so clutch.

I'm offering up M. Tkachuk (of course depending on tonight's Canes game) for a good trade offer.
