Cards also signed Fowler, forfeiting their 1st round pick because of the QO...smart on their part so the Astros don't get another first rounder.

KLaw rates Cubs system at 18th - ok with that, lots of upside in the minors. Led by Eloy Jimenez, Ian Happ and Dylan Cease in the Top 100. Happ is a 2B, but likely to be moved to COF to get him up quicker - will likely start in AA, but has a shot of making the majors as a call-up or in 2018. Jimenez I would guess starts in high A this year, so is 2-3 years out from making any waves, but his power and glove should help him - he just turned 20 and demolished A-ball, hoping we get a couple of good JHey years, and he opts out after 2019 and we have a replacement waiting - seems like a pipe dream.

Two other pitchers could make the mid year top 100 in Jose Albertos and Oscar de la Cruz, assuming Cruz can stay healthy and Albertos shows the stuff everyone is expecting. Lots of pitchers in the Cubs top 10 (5 of them) - all are still a few years away, with the slight exception of Trevor Clifton who should start in AA this year and is projecting as a 4th/5th starter.

klaw's list this year was especially suspect.

So is last year's NL co-HR champ going to be stuck playing in Japan or what?

Carter has said that he wants to and will play in MLB. The Rays seems to be the team with the most rumored interest. Realize that his game has flaws, but the lack of interest in a player that hit 41 HRs the year before is a surprise. Power was the thing a few years ago; now, it's well-rounded players that can run and play defense.

Teams have figured out that they could power their way to.....just out of the playoffs. Good pitching and defense beats good hitting over the long haul in baseball. Thus the swing toward more rounded players. Surprising some AL team hasn't looked at him as a better option than what they have at DH.

I think it just has a lot to do with the glut of options on the market driving down prices. Most teams filled their needs already. So cheap teams (ie Rays) are just waiting it out and bargain hunting.

Lots of decent FAs left - Napoli, Carter, Wieters, Hammel, Colby Lewis, Doug Fister, Desmond Jennings, Jake Peavy, a ton of RP arms - all have warts, but lots of plug and play guys out there that could be had cheap.

sounds like the market has been saturated with players - at least at these guys asking prices.

"cheap"

there's been some chatter about the rays possibly landing Alvarez and one of napoli/carter. typically pretty averse to platooning 1b but given we have a roving dh spot open until ramos is back i wouldn't hate that. really i am hoping for f gut plus one of carter/napoli and roll with that.

Explain. Also, what list did you like best?

probably ba's list.

my issue with klaw is it seems so upside oriented and he chases that in his lists. his flame-out rate seems higher than anyone else as a result, and his list seems the least similar from year to year. he seems more interested in being provocative and wanting to be the first person on a guy and then giving up on them when they get to aa/aaa and you see what they are.

YAY rays sign rickie weeks to a milb deal!

booo rays sign lomo to an mlb deal.

hoping were just going to dfa franklin and still move on carter.

so it looks like chris carter is going to sign with the yanks for peanuts. what the fucking fuck, rays?

Weird signing for NY. Isn't Holliday their full-time DH? They're both righties, so they can't even platoon.

yup... seemed weird, but it's cheap and they're the yankees. he's tyler austin insurance i guess.

Mike Napoli to the Rangers. The number of remaining MLB free agents that could be expected to make even a limited contribution this year is dwindling (even these guys have major question marks):

- Travis Wood
- Matt Wieters
- Adam Lind
- Colby Lewis
- Aaron Hill
- Coco Crisp
- Doug Fister
- Joe Blanton
- Pedro Alvarez

Then there are a bunch of guys, who at one time were solid players (Luke Hochevar, Marlon Byrd, Billy Butler, Matt Harrison, Jarrod Parker, CJ Wilson), but are coming off injuries or just really horrible seasons.

Then, you have the old guys that can't give it up (Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jonathan Papelbon, Tim Lincecum, Jered Weaver), but appear to be done.

really hoping the rays preferred wieters over carter and are working out something there. wieters/casali and then wieters/ramos would be the strongest we've likely ever been at catcher.
