UNC's top fundraiser resigned yesterday after an investigation was opened in to him taking personal trips with Tyler Hansbrough's mom and charging it to the school

“It was difficult because Matt has been such a great person for the university and has raised billions of dollars for us,” Thorp added

really? That seems like a ton of money. Maybe he meant millions

Seriously. This has gone WELL below community college status.

based on the article he has been there 20 years. if he were to raise $50mil a year for the score that would be a billion dollars over that time frame. may be high but not impossible.

i wonder when the majority of unc alums are going to finally say enough is enough with this shit.

Yeah that makes sense. I hadn't read the entire article when I first posted it.

unfortunately UNC still isn't seeming to get enough national media attention for the NCAA to bust them. seemed like some free tattoos got the ball rolling at Ohio State, don't know why people aren't jumping on UNC yet. its getting ridiculous

It's because they aren't that good at football, so there's no outrage about "they only win because...!" out there.

yeah this is obviously true, but i think everyone can see that this goes so much further than just football.

The personnel changes give another twist to Hansbrough’s unusual work history at UNC-Chapel Hill. She was originally hired on Dec. 8, 2008, as a fundraiser for the foundation that serves UNC-CH’s dental school. At the time, her son Tyler, a senior, was beginning his final season on the basketball team, a season that would bring the university a national championship. Tyler Hansbrough was named an All-America and now plays in the NBA.

Thorp confirmed that a dental foundation audit later found that during that championship run, Tami Hansbrough had been traveling to cities in which Tyler Hansbrough was playing basketball. But Thorp said those foundation-paid trips were legitimate because she was raising money for the university, and UNC fans traveling to those games would have been good candidates to make donations.

Thorp said the university contacted the NCAA about the audit’s findings. He was unaware of the NCAA taking any action.

Giving star basketball player's parents a job at the University? Such cheating.

No...it's because a great deal of the "journalist" is North Carolina graduated from UNC-ch. So much for integrity.

Thorp himself is so shady:

In mid 2010, Kupec sought to hire a fundraiser. By then, Kupec was in a relationship with Hansbrough, Thorp said, and Thorp had heard that she might be interested in the job. When Thorp learned that she would be reporting to Kupec in the new job, Thorp told Kupec he could not hire her because it would violate the university’s nepotism policy since they were in a relationship.

The position disappeared and was never filled. A short time later, another fundraising position surfaced, only this time it reported to Winston Crisp, who is the vice chancellor for student affairs. Thorp said he had supported the position being created.

After what Thorp said was a proper job search with multiple candidates, Crisp hired Hansbrough for the job. But Hansbrough traveled regularly with Kupec, who separated from his wife in October 2009. The marriage ended by divorce two years later, Orange County records show.

I honestly think the Thomas thing at Duke may be what finally takes UNC down. If it is clear that Thomas was not eligible and hence the NCAA has not choice but to vacate their championship, you can bet K and the power brokers at Duke will have a big "but wait a minute" response in comparing what one player and maybe his agent did vs. a ton of players, coaches, administrators, faculty, tutors, fund raisers, etc. at UNC. In fact I'll venture that the UNC folk wish the Thomas thing never came up.
