WFU Hoops: '23-'24 Roster Construction Thread: +Miller, Sallis, Reid, & Canka

Key portal commitments today; also Ace Baldwin followed his coach from VCU to Penn State:

Hadn't seen this posted yet - from an article on The Athletic entitled "Men's College Basketball Transfer Portal Commits and Their Fits"

Kevin “Boopie” Miller | 6-0 point guard | Three years of eligibility | Transferred from Central Michigan to Wake Forest

The scout: Miller can fly with the ball in his hands, and that’s important going up a level. Speed usually translates. See Souley Boum. Miller played just four games as a sophomore because of a foot injury, but he was off to a good start, averaging 18.5 points and 5.3 assists. He can really score off the bounce and works well out of ball screens. He’s shot a solid 36.1 percent from 3 and is comfortable shooting off the catch or bounce. His assist rate was super high, especially for a young player. Considering Wake Forest coach Steve Forbes track record with transfers, it’s probably smart to bet on Miller.

The fit: Miller will slide right into the Tyree Appleby role at Wake Forest. His advanced numbers actually look a lot like Appleby’s from his first two years at Cleveland State. Forbes featured Appleby in a ton of ball screen action and Miller is equipped to be used the same way. He’s got a competitive streak in him too, which should play well on a Forbes-coached team.

wonder how many recruits we are simultaneously pitching the alondes/appleby role to

It seems like Samuel sees himself as more of a 4 than a 5. He's still visiting Florida, which is concerning. They can probably allow him to play the 4 where we can't.
Yep. No way he can understand the best college center not named Alcindor was the best power forward in the NBA for a decade+

I’ve always assumed they just keep a running tab and don’t bother to alphabetize it.

Samuel wants the option to shoot the three and demonstrate a more complete offensive package. 45% of his shots came from three his first two years at Seton Hall. He connected on 32.6%. The percentage dropped to 17.6% of his shots his junior year and 5.9% his senior year. A restricted offensive role. With Forbes, if he can make three's, he can take three's. That ability makes him more valuable to the Wake offense. His greatest value is on D and he will likely be asked to direct the D and a big. That's the kind of responsibility that NBA scouts value. Good fit for both the player and the team.

I like Sallis. Excellent D and needs an expanded opportunity on offense. He left high school as a five star PG recruit, ranked 10th on 247, 15th on ESPN and 37th on Rivals. If Forbes works his magic with 6'5" Hunter Sallis another POY is possible.. At worst, the team would have two, new, top level defenders that would change the dynamic of practice and games on D. GGTT would take a new tone. Take a moment to reflect on what this team really needs and what these two players bring. They fit.

If Samuel and Sallis aren't Forbes top two targets, they are on the short list.

Just a guess.

Edwards would be a good addition to the Deacon roster. The transfer portal seems to get better with each passing day.
Which is one reason I'm not too eager for Forbes to lock up a portal class.

When a coach can add players they know will fit and contribute to their team they should do so. There is no rush. At this point in time, good options continue to emerge. Forbes has shown no indication to "settle" for recruits. That is why the majority have been successful.
