Cubs fans unite, its our year!

Here's my guess on the starting lineup:

1. Fukudome/Colvin (RF)
2. Castro (SS)
3. Byrd (CF)
4. Pena (1B)
5. Ramirez (3B)
6. Soriano (LF)
7. Soto (C)
8. Baker/Barney/Dewitt (2B)
9. Pitcher

Also I imagine that Pena and Ramirez can be switched around in the 4 and 5 spot.

Any reasons why we should be significantly better than last year? Doesn't seem like there are any major roster changes (other than coaching). Do we still have an interim manager?

For the cubs to be successful this year, the leadoff spot and 2b will Have to produce. Soto needs to rebound from his sophomore slump, and they will have to be able to manufacture runs somehow. That line up has zero speed in it. Ramirez is in a contract year so hopefully he produces like it. If the cubs finish higher than 4th, it will be a good year. It will come down to their pitching and being able to hold teams to 3 runs or fewer to stay in games.

Mike Quade, the interim manager after Lou retired, now has the job full time. Besides that they really only added Carlos Pena at 1B but they're really counting on players who had down years offensively last year, especially Aramis and Soriano, to step it up this season.

Also added Garza.

Either way, I think the Durham Bulls OF is better to start the year than the Cubs. The Cubs look awful.

Well I hope deacphan is wrong. I'm more excited about the Cubs than I was in '09 off the '08 playoff debacle or last year when we did nothing really in the offseason. Hopefully the Garza and Pena moves pay dividends, though I'm not thrilled with the Quade hire or the fact that Hendry is still around (if we suck this year he's gottago)

thats ridiculous, the cubs do suck but no way.

deacphan

thats ridiculous, the cubs do suck but no way.

Jennings>>>>Any of those guys.

Soriano over his last two seasons is worth 1.5 WAR per year. He's terrible.

Colvin's below average.

ZIPS projections:

Byrd- .334, -5
Soriano- .337, -5
Colvin- .316, 0

Jennings- .330, +5
Carter- .317, 0
Guyer- .313, +10
Anderson- .306, +5
Ruggiano- .295, 0

So Ruggiano is terrible. So don't include him.

Jennings is 1 win better than Byrd in CF (same wOBA projection with easily a win diff. in defense at this point.). Guyer is a win betetr than Colvin. He's a +10 COF. He's at least average in CF per every scouting report I've seen, so that is generally +10 in a corner. So Soriano needs to be 2 wins better than Chris Carter at this point for the Cubs offense to be better. ZIPs has him at 1 win better offensively over 600 PAs, so he needs to be 1 win better in LF. Carter is probably around averageish.

So it looks to me like the Bulls are better. Granted if Brett Jackson moves Byrd to a COF spot then that could change.

(For disclosure purposes I used ZIPs rather than MARCEL because ZIPs includes minor league performance which is what we have primarily for everyone but Byrd/Soriano).

rjequalsmj
03-30-2011, 10:17 AM
well, it may be closer than I thought but chris carter isnt even close to an average defender, he's absolutely atrocious.

deacphan

It's close and hinges on if 2009 or 2010 Soriano shows up.

You think the Bulls have a better OF than Soriano/Byrd/Colvin?

Cubs' outfield is a question mark, IMO. Soriano is a shell of the player he was 5 years ago. Byrd is very solid, but hitting in the 3 spot? Colvin could really give the team a lift if he hits more consistently.

Wakeforest22890
03-30-2011, 10:28 AM

They are in an inbetween spot right now. There are questions at just about every position. The Soriano contract hangs heavy. Colvin was really bad down the stretch. Have pitchers figured him out. Will ARam rebound as this is the last year of his contract. Will Pena hit. Which version of Soto will we get. Was Fukudome's tear at the end of last season a sign he's finally really adjusted or will he just continue to be servicable. Has Castro's D improved? Can DeWitt field at all. Assuming he doesn't play everyday, how does second really look. Was Z's end of the year for real or is he going to flounder. Is there even an ace on the staff? How good is the bullpen (every team has to ask this one admittedly).

They could compete, but an awful lot of things have to fall into place for it to happen. They are a club in transition and it will take a few years before I think we'll head into a season where the number of questions is more manageable.

Headed to the Twins vs. A's next Sunday. Pretty pumped as Target Field is just an awesome experience.

I think we get to 83-85ish wins, so yea--enough to keep things interesting and maintain (false) hope here and there, but not enough to contend seriously in what is still a very weak decision.

Ultimately, I'm rooting for 1 of 2 scenarios: (1) Cubs win the WS; (2) Cubs finish with whatever (poor) record is necessary to jettison Jim Hendry.

Wells on the mound today and up 2-1 in the top of the 5th behind a Soriano solo shot and a sac fly in the bottom of the 4th. Wells with 5 K's and 3 walks so far with 4 hits given up. Looks like he's in pretty good command of his stuff, but I'm just following on gametracker so it's hard to tell. Would be good to get a win today and get back to .500 through 4 home games.

Cubs manage to hold on 6-5. Shark once again proves that he is--and always has been--fucking terrible.

Aside from the injury to Cash (which hopefully isn't too serious, though the fact that it involves his shoulder is troubling), this is a pretty nice win. I think based on defense alone the Cubs have to see if Pena can get his swing back together. Colvin also really struggled a lot down the stretch last year. But he looks good at the plate so far this year. And that was an awesome assist from RF the other day. Guy will certainly get a ton of games at various spots.

Headed to Target Field this weekend. That park has made me almost as much of a Twins fan as a Cubs fan. Almost.

I'm in the group that thinks Smarjzdijajdiza isn't actually that bad - he just needs to learn some control. Reminds me of Marmol from a couple of years ago. I don't think he is ever going to be a quallity starter - but use him for 1 inning out of the pen, not so bad.

He had clearly lost it in the 5th, but yea, aside from the Marshall/Wood/Marmol 7/8/9 string (which Quade only breaks out when we have a lead going into the 7th, and even then, he can't do it every day), the pen pretty much blows. Grabow is awful, Shark shouldn't be in the majors, and Russell--who's been pretty decent the last season plus--is now our a starter.

Dempster's always been a high pitch-count guy; high strikeout totals, erratic walk rate, and (as we saw last night) declining control after 4 or 5 winnings.

I still generally like Quade overall, at least more so than idiot Lou Piniella.

DaDeacs
04-12-2011, 08:50 AM
Not to play devils advocate, but he had just loaded the bases in the 6th, after walking back to back hitters - he had something like 25-30 pitches in the 6th and was looking gassed, got lucky to induce the ground ball for the final out.

We had 4 pitchers in the pen who hadn't pitched in at least two days - I get that Smardjzaza sucks, but if you are going to keep him on the team and pretend that he could one day be a starter, you have to give him a shot or demote him. Put him out in the 7th, then you have Marshall/Grabow/Marmol to bring you home.

What worries me is that we haven't played anyone good yet. The pirates & brewcrew both have .500 records, but not sure either is going to be any good come middle/end of the year. The Dbacks & stros are trash, the padres have no hitting - the only good team we played, the Rockies, we lost 2/3.

I guess it could be a good sign too, since it looks like there may only be a couple of decent teams in the NL this year. All we need to do is beat out the reds, and not worry about anything else. Getting Cashner & Wells back well really help - I dont even want to start thinking whats going to happen if we have to call up Doug Davis or Ramon Ortiz.

Where the hell did Fuld come from? I mean, I know he had all this promise a couple of years ago, but he never made it up except for the September call ups. Now he is blazing a trail (literally) as the Rays lead off hitter?

I liked Garza when he was with the Twins, fiery guy, reminded me of Zambrano - he still reminds me of Zambrano, just pre-counseling 2010 Zambrano.

Good to see Soto coming back around - not that it super tough to do this early in the season, but he has jump his BA by 100 points over the last 6 games.

Maybe we can move him out of the 8 hole and put in the 3 spot.

I have a Soto Cubs jersey. He is swinging the bat well this year.

I think we may bump Castro down to the 3, but I like him at leadoff. If Soto can keep producing then he could be really useful at the 3.

DaDeacs
04-20-2011, 03:46 PM
I heard that about Castro - I think it would be a mistake to drop him to 3. I could see the 2 spot, if we wanted to put Barney or even kosuke at the 1.

Castro's offensive game reminds me of ryno - and he did his best damage when he was in the 2 hole - granted he hit 40 home runs in the clean-up spot - but we need a guy to set the table to let aram, pena, soto and sori bring them in.

Huge come-from-behind win today. Castro with another multi-hit game, and Quade with a nice call of sitting Pena (lol) for Jeff Baker at 1B, particularly because Baker absolutely mashes lefties (and the Dodgers started our old friend, Ted Lilly, a lefty).

Nice to be back at .500, but we've really suffered with the Wells/Cashner injuries. Apparently both threw yesterday pain-free, but neither off of pitching mounds. Russell is scheduled to start Tuesday, but Quade's quotes in the Tribune yesterday make it sound like we're scrambling to find absolutely anyone else to take the start instead.

Try to sit in bleachers for one game if you can. Completely, different atmosphere. Go to Murphy's before/after game. Plenty of other Wrigleyville bars to hit up. I'll be going up and catching all 3 Yankees games in June and watch a few White Sox/Cubs games. Personally, I love staying around Wrigley when I go. Not counting the 3 error inning, Castro looks like a legit stud in the making. He can hit .330 with 10-15 HRs, 75 RBIs and steal 20+ bases. Put him in the 3 hole and you can see his rbi number getting higher.

Just saw over on Bleed Cubbie Blue (http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2011/4/28/2138018/what-should-the-cubs-do-about-rainouts) that the Cubs have a new rainout policy this year. In the past you were able to get a refund or even exchange your ticket for another date, but this appears to no longer be the case - now it appears that the ticket you bought for a rained out game will only be good for the scheduled make-up date.

Can't say I'm a fan of this new policy.

At least Barney/Castro seem to be players you can build around. They still have Soriano's contract, they need to get off books. Any chance we see a move to bullpen for Ryan Dempster? He has looked atrocious this year. We could actually really use Dempsters arm in the pen.

Who the hell would we start in his place? Thomas Diamond? Jay Jackson?

The Cubs don't have 4 starters, much less 5, and certainly not 6 (which we would effectively need, were we to move Dempster into the bully).

Also, he has more extraordinarily unlucky so far than bad. His HR/FB% is far higher than this career or league averages and is sure to regress to the mean. His K rate is fine and his velocity is fine. He'll be OK.

KidA23
05-03-2011, 07:42 AM
The Pena deal is also totally fine.

-It's a 1-year deal.
-He's not blocking any 1B prospects.
-His signing did not preclude the Cubs from either (1) pursuing another more capable 1B or (2) spending that $10 million on another free agent. Fielder and Pujols will still be FAs this winter, and the Cubs' relative position will not be any worse as a result of the Pena contract.
-His .BABIP and secondary metrics last year were far lower than his career averages and are (still) likely to regress to the mean.
-He is going from the AL East to the NL Central, a huge step down in competition, thus it was likely he'd improve on last year's numbers.
-It's May 3rd, and you're talking about a player who historically is as streaky as they come. Like, Soriano-levels of streakiness.
-It's a 1-year deal.

I get the long-term impact. More talking about a win this year situation and spending $10 million for one year at a career .235 hitter. I mean, why even spend the $10 million on the guy? We knew our starting staff was going to be weak, even with Garza, and we banked on a rookie or Carlos Silva as our 5th starter? And Kerry Wood the only option to shore up the pen?

Hopefully we can pull a 6-3/5-4 out of those nine - looks like we will miss Cain & Sanchez from the giants (still will have to face Lincecum though). The reds are scary good on offense and have a woefully bad starting staff (probably worse than ours, INCLUDING russell) - maybe pena will go all streaky like KidA said earlier and he can pull 2/3 in the next few series and climb back into contention.

HUGE win for the cubbies today over the Reds. 2 runs in the 9th for a 3-2 win.

Dempster on the hill tomorrow for the series win

Dempster with back-to-back solid games, maybe I pegged him wrong.

Cubs go 1-12 with men on base yesterday - yuck. Whats wrong with Starlin? Batting .192 over his last 18 games and .080 in the month of May. Somebody call Gracie, we need a slumpbuster...

The pitchers are adjusting to him, and it will take time for him to adjust back. It makes sense that he would struggle like this because he swings at a ton of balls. Pitchers are figuring this out and throwing him a lot of high fastballs, which he swings at all the time. This is good for him in the long run as it is making him develop more plate discipline now rather than later.

if this team could ever just fire on all cylinders for a few days it would be fantastic.

Starlin goes slumping precisely when the amber alert is called off for Pena

No, I get why he is slumping (granted he did this last year too - he is young, but he had a full year last year, and it was his second month up last year that he had a long slump).

I really just want to say Slumpbuster - I loved Gracie, too bad he had a falling out with cubs management, would love to see him as the new tv or radio guy.

Pretty sloppy game defensively for Cubs. They've strung together lots of hits, but all singles. Cardinals threatening here in the 8th.

Yup...we should be up by 2-3 runs.

Soriano and Hill have killed us defensively. Glad to see us get 4 runs, but now Wood loads the bases up.

BIG out there...let's get out of this Wood...you deserve it.

Frustrating, but at least they've had lots of good AB's this game. Looking forward to seeing them in Wrigley against Yankees next month and against White Sox.

I think we are gonna make a huge run at him next year. We have a lot of young guys and will be able to let some of the older guys go that are taking up the contracts (not sure what we are going to do with ARam and Soriano).

Was at the game last night and was lucky enough to be under cover for the rain delay (man, that was nasty) - great to see the Cubs finally get the bats working in sync. That third inning was a thing of beauty.

Also, I'm not a fan of going after Pujols - he's simply going to cost too much for too long to be worth it, IMO.

I think he would definitely be worth it for the first 3-4 years, but he is going to want a 7 year deal, and by the 5th year, there is a chance he will be a shell of his current self. Having said that, I think we should go for him. Have 1-2-3 or Barney/Castro/Pujols could be deadly. If we could get Pujols and 2 decent level starters (think Lilly/Marquis from a few years back) to go with Garza and Z, we could have a shot next year.

Sori's not going anywhere, unless someone is desperate to take on a large chunk of his salary. I actually hate that people boo him, I get that we spent a lot of money on him, but that was a mistake on our part, not his. I think it was a miserable investment and I hate the ups and downs he goes through in the field and at the plate, but whats with the boos?

I think the Cubs are a lot further from contending than that, but I also think that the Cubs are much better served saving that money and funneling it into scouting and player development so that we can have continued success over a number of years instead of a quick flash in the pan.

I also think that there's no way that Pujols signs for less than a 10-year deal, which will make at least half of his contract a disaster. I'd much rather he stay in St. Louis and eat up their books for the next decade than come to Chicago for a two or three year window of contention like we did with Soriano.

Ok, for arguments sake, take off pena, add pujols - .050 BA bonus, plus 5 hr and 12 more rbis (almost 1/2 a run per game). Take off Russell and Coleman, replace with two $8 million per year pitchers - the cubs are 2-7 when Coleman/Russell pitch.

Having had 5 1 run losses (and 4 2 run losses), plus having a pitcher that can go more than 4 innings in a start, to me, this would net 6 more wins to date, putting the cubs at 22-14, 2 games off the best record in baseball.
