Our Next BB Coach or #MannUp + other coach talk

Bz has been Stack level bad. You have to really suck to be on that level. I have little doubt that Paulsen and Reed would put better teams on the floor than Bz. Recruiting at this level would be the big question mark for them though.

Please don't insult Staak like that.

To clarify, I'd have Shaka/Marshall as tier 1, Krystkowiak as his own tier 2, W/M/M/L as tier 3, and H/R/M/P as tier 4, otherwise known as the tier of death. Not Buzzdick stab you in the heart as he's insulting you kind of death. More like dying in your sleep because you just don't care if you live any longer kind of death.

Tier 2 - White, Miller, Masiello, or Krystkowiak - all four have varying degrees of risk reward. I would be excited about any of them, as each has the potential to be a great hire that stays at Wake for years and years to come.

How have these guys looked in terms of recruiting?

I don't think Krystkowiak will be considered due to georgraphy but his Utah turnaround is pretty jaw dropping. Compare this to the Bz rebuild:

Year one in 2012 they were worst BCS college basketball team ever assembled (298 Kenpom, walk-ons all over the court). Year two in 2013 11 new players and up to #108. Year 3 up to #35 (with a team that is #280 in experience and plays basically no seniors).

A lot of UVA fans weren't thrilled with Bennett's hiring, I think because few had seen his WSU teams play. I was fairly pumped at Bennett's hiring from the beginning having witnessed his mildly talented WSU teams make the tourney twice in a row by winning a bunch of 43-41 games. I see Krystkowiak the same way. Maybe he is a West Coast guy, I dunno. Nor do I know if Ron would make such a call. But just because he's been out West the last 3 years doesn't mean he couldn't get things done on the East Coast, and he'd be my 3rd call if I were Ron.

If there is any truth to the SI article on the issues at UCLA, there is no way Ron Wellman even considers Ben Howland.

This is why I think all the discussion about Howland is a waste of time. The national perception of Howland is a jerk who let a program spiral out of control at UCLA. If Wellman hires Howland, it basically negates Wellman's ability to point to any success from the [Redacted] Experience, because Wellman won't even be able to claim a victory for reestablishing "culture." So [Redacted] fixed the culture, but Wellman immediately hires a guy whose most recent coaching experience flies in the face of culture? No way. Wellman is not going to allow that to happen.

Plus, it's not even as if Howland is a slam dunk hire in terms of W/L. If you're going to hire a guy with that much baggage, he'd better have a sterling resume. While Howland definitely had some fantastic years and a great run of Final 4s, the mediocre years that ended his UCLA tenure and the questions about how much he relied on his departed assistant coaches will not be ignored.

Howland and Pauslen are the only two guys I think could possibly keep us at the Bzzz level of suckitude. See previous posts for rationale. Howland would be a disaster imo, and probably an expensive one. He's probably my least favorite candidate, all things considered. It would be like a continuation of the unwiped ass era.

I still haven't really heard any reasons why I should be disappointed with Lonergan. If I had to put money on who I thought Wellman would hire, he would be my pick. A couple of weeks ago I would have said Mooney or Reed, but neither is having a very good season.

Being as most of the information regarding Howland was disseminated through the national media, it's highly unlikely that Wellman or anyone in the crackerjack athletic department know anything about it.

Mooney is the worst of all these names. Not because he's a bad coach. But because I don't think he'd be able to recruit at an ACC level with his style of ball. With Howland, I'd at least have some hope that he'd keep Battle on to help him recruit, and maybe we'd get a higher caliber of kids coming in. But yeah, with Howland and Casstevens in the building, there's a good chance of scandal somewhere down the road.

I don't like Howland but the guy is no [Redacted]

How have these guys looked in terms of recruiting?

White: Reputation for being a good recruiter at Ole Miss. Recruited an excellent 3 star SG to La Tech in his first class (impressive). Not too much else star wise at La Tech but no one is bringing stars in there.
Miller: Reputation for being a tireless/excellent recruiter and Ohio St/Arizona: Has recruited 3 top 150ish national players with very high major offers to Dayton in last two classes.
Masiello: Pitino's lead recruiter at L'Ville for 7 years. Hard to tell at Manhattan because they recruit UR kids. But I think he'd be great.
Larry K: Don't really have a feel. Utah was in such bad shape when he took over he was signing lots of UR kids. But now that he has turned the ship he has a couple of nice commits for 2014.

According to this Shaka is bringing in a top 10 class to VCU next year. Just imagine what he could do in the ACC in terms of recruiting.
Virginia Commonwealth's Shaka Smart is bringing in a talented 2014 recruiting class that is a custom fit for wreaking havoc on the Atlantic 10 and the rest of D-I hoops.

Super-athletic small forward Terry Larrier is an explosive leaper who has no trouble getting to the rim. Because he is an effective passer, he can also fill the role of point forward.

Where Larrier really shines is on the other end of the court. He can defend multiple positions and completely shut down passing lanes.

Power forward Mike Gilmore is long, athletic and has a great motor. He is a shot-blocking and rebound specialist.

Lightning-fast point guard Jonathan Williams loves to push the tempo on the break and apply defensive pressure everywhere.

Lonergan isn't exciting enough to some folks here. Hell, I'm not excited by him. But he has a Clawsonesque track record at Vermont and GW and took over a pretty darn bad GW program. That's why I have him in the acceptable tier 3 group and think more highly of him than some others here do.

How have these guys looked in terms of recruiting?

Mike White's recruiting at Louisiana Tech hasn't been anything spectacular - he's signed one 3-star for next year, plus 4 NR players. His recruiting experience principally comes from being an assistant at Ole Miss. I guess you could argue that recruiting experience is White's biggest weakness

Masiello has signed one 4-star, two 2-star, and one 1-star for next year. Three 2-stars last year. About the same the year before. But again, his recruiting experience comes more from his time as an assistant to Petino at Louisville.

Krystkowiak has had consistently the best recruiting as a HC of any of the 4 in that grouping. However, his record compared to the caliber of recruits he has brought in isn't good. Masiello, for example, has been more successfully with lesser regarded recruits.

if howland is the best we can hope for from wellman then maybe an older coach that could turn things around while wellman prepares to retire is a good thing. makes wake relevent again before and during athletic department turnover. next guy makes the next bball hire.

Yeah this is a better synopsis of the points I was trying to make. Miller, White, and Masiello all have great reputations as recruiters when they were assistants, but it's tough to judge their recruiting abilities as HCs because it's more difficult to recruit to their current HC posts.

I'm much more concerned with their ability to develop talent once they bring it in, as I think all three could recruit very successfully at Wake. Based on their records at their current jobs, I think all three could bring in top tier talent and develop it well.

Thanks for the info but reading this doesn't make me feel particularly good about any of these second tier guys in terms of recruiting, especially when we know what Shaka has managed to do at VCU. I guess Miller and Masiello have the most potential upside in terms of recruiting as far as the second tier guys go?
