And this is why it is vital to be honest about the mental health issues and illness that contribute these episodes of violence. I get what you are saying, there is a bias in the way these episodes are reported which affects the way people perceive and apply culpability. That’s a problem that disproportionately benefits white murderers and harms black murderers. To be clear, I think mental health is a factor in a lot of violent crime (most non money motivated violent crime?) and I think being more honest about that every time will help prevent events in the future. I don’t think that being more restrictive in how we apply the phrase is the answer.
 
One more thing. We can't just look at mental health as an individual issue. Mental health is also public health and we have to acknowledge structural elements of our society that exacerbate mental health challenges and outcomes of poor mental health. Elements such as the proliferation of guns in our society.

all this talk of mental health is a waste of time. just pull up those bootstraps and assume nothing is wrong since YOU don't see it happening.

Side note: I knew Michael Hayes and one of the victims.* That entire event was bungled by the WSPD and Forsyth Sherriff's department because neither thought they had jurisdiction (it was right near city limits) and left one street unblocked for several minutes allowing traffic to flow right to him, which in turn allowed him to kill/injure at least 2 more victims before a junior deputy took him down with several shots that didn't kill him. Then the DA fucked it up too, that guy wasn't insane he was high as shit on some mixture of cough medicine and coke I think it was and sleep deprived, and an asshole. I don't remember how his defense was able to convince the jury but the DA IIRC sucked badly too, Tisdale maybe (same guy that fucked up Darryl Hunt I think). He should have gotten life

*Michael was older than me and in the early 80's I raced BMX on a team from Cycle City down on Peter's Creek and he worked there repairing mopeds and bikes, and raced on the team. He was a dipshit redneck but we looked up to him and used to hang around the shop and learned how to fix bikes from him. I think my brother bought a quarter from him later on, too. Another pal of mine was in the line of cars Hayes stopped and shot into. They saw him firing into the car in front of them and described seeing him turn to them next when that car fled and they floored his Trans Am and has they rode by he took a bullet into the back and out the chest. We visited him in the hospital the next day and he was still in shock.

Over the last few days there have been TikToks encouraging kids to cause gun violence at schools today (December 17th). Several schools and districts have cancelled school today because of this. Gun violence and the threat of violence remains is the main issue in schools in the US, not masks or teaching about racism.
