KP St. Joe's Preview 11:30 AM (YES AM) Thursday November 15

Was at the game today & will be there tomorrow also. FWIW what I saw in the first half was a very entertaining basketball game if you didn't care who won [either team] because neither team can play defense and all they tried to really do was shoot 3's. We are really very athletic, something I don't think we have been in quite a while. But we have no clue how to stay in front of a long range shooting team and stay up on them. We were so scared they were going around us in our m-to-m defense that we gave them a 3 foot gap to get off their 22 foot jumpers. That means we know we have no help side defense if we get beat off the dribble.
They popped for 16-30 on 3's and rained them at will. When they got around us they did get to the rim easily & made their athletic lay ups--something we don't do very well. We put up junk on the break and put up contested back to basket junk like it is "our turn to shoot" instead of finding the open man. Sorry to say this is a 10-12 win team. We just haven't learned in 4+ years to play any defense. Or want to play any defense.

Because the story is that Manning develops big men. Sarr was built up the entire offseason. It's going to take a few games for people to slow their roll.

Sarr has been a liability in both games this season. Turnover prone on offense and lost on defense. Any fan should see that.

He had multiple guys significantly smaller than him outmuscling him for the ball, inexcusable.

Where did you park? What a nightmare of a set up for a tournament! No signs. Nobody directing traffic. But the new construction at the football stadium looked good.

The good news is that Wake only got out-rebounded by 1!!

The bad news is it wasn't worse because they didn't really have to crash the offensive glass having made so many 3's.

Eventually the shots won't go in and we might have a chance to win...against Houston Baptist.

ETA: why not pour on the misery?? Get this, a 6' guard for SJ equaled the total rebounds secured by the trio of Wright, Brown & Childress, with 7. No bueno!!

Im more concerned about the dearth of rebounds collected by our bigs. Chill lead the team with 5...

Our guys got down 8-10 to start the second half and flat out quit! No excuse for the that. I wanted Larry Brown and not Ernie Nestor. Larry has won championships. He might have some answers. Ernie might be a great guy, but he has won nothing, albeit in limited and disadvantageous opportunities.

Don't see much of a future in Sarr and Brown. If the latter was a 4 star recruit, I was a 2 star and never got off the bench. The team has a loser mentality that will be hard to shed regardless of the coach.

Larry Brown?

Hard to collect rebounds when the other team is shooting north of 50%. Also, as they were shooting a lot of 3's, longer rebounds.

Larry Brown as Wake bench coach is delusional.

Not as bench coach. Special adviser during preseason and occasional visits when needed in-season. I don't think we have any teachers on the bench so kids won't learn how to play.

Well, we missed 16 shots in the first 19 minutes of the 2nd half and got not a single offensive board. Zero. Zilch. So, there were missed opportunities!

That’s a shame because offensive rebounds are literally #newbeginnings.

This is the first of many long days this winter. We have a low IQ coach who is in over his head. At best, Manning could be a solid HS coach or maybe a college assistant. He should have never been hired in the first place. There was no reason to retain him after last season. However, it still amazes me that people continue to defend this clown. He should be dismissed immediately if for no other reason to show we have a desire to be good again and incompetence will not be tolerated. It will not happen...but it should.

At some point kids are going to realize they really hurt their potential NBA value coming to WF as NBA GMs are going to significantly haircut their value knowing they will not have learned any basic fundamental D skills while in college and if anything picked up some very bad habits they will have to work to break....

Salty...and accurate.

What’s the discussion going to be like around here when we are 5-12 heading into conference play?

Is it any wonder that in the past year seven players chose to pursue their basketball dreams elsewhere?

Lots of emphasis on the Wake defense. We were bad at everything. Rebounding, blocking out, free throw shooting, excessive dribbling, turnovers, minimal understanding basketball is a passing game, substitution patterns, shot selection. There is no facet of the game of basketball that St Joe did not whip us in. None. Fix this defense and you would still lose because it's a total train wreck. We could actually have a philosophy of outscoring an opponent, but we are fundamentally bad at offense too. It's really hard not to be good at something.

Agree.
