WAKE/DUKE THREAD

What did you think about our defensive performance?

Our inexperienced freshmen struggled defensively in their first ACC game- to say the least- against an experienced, well-coached, fundamentally sound dook team. Not a great dook team (I don't think they can go all the way), but a typical K coached team.

We don't match up with them at all, their offense exposed our MANY defensive weaknesses, 3's beat 2's all day long...We have no answer for Ryan Kelly...

I didn't hear any of the mentions of Duncan's line against Alaska-Anchorage. But since I'm interested in facts, I'll post a few.

In Duncan's first game, he played 10 minutes and scored 0 points on 0 FG attempts. He had 7 rebounds. Somehow that has been twisted into some crazy story about one of the greatest players of all time having a slow start to his career when in fact, he was an unheralded freshman coming out of nowhere to start his first game and he managed to get 7 boards in 10 min in a strictly defensive capacity.

By the way, he had 12 and 12 in 26 minutes in his next game against Hawaii and 15/3 in his first ACC game.

I was incorrect early, today was actually [Redacted]'s 10th straight loss against a rival, not 9th.

Is that really the word you wanted there?

Regardless, I disagree purely from a player protection standpoint. You shouldn't get a hypothetical halo time period where once you ditch the ball you can run like a freight train into people. And your argument that people would no longer stand in the way doesn't really make any sense. It would be just as easy to drive right into the player and dish at the last second. It would be far too easy to just take people out.

It's crap. Players wouldn't get themselves in that position. Just like they have changed their play in the examples I gave of other rules changes.

Of course you won't admit how absurd your position has been about all off the ball contact.

23k posts. The guy gets it done through sheer attrition and free time, I'll give him that.

If your rule stood, it's not up to the defender to choose where to be. Run at player, dish quickly. Technically off the ball contact, and not a foul for rj. I'd run it all day to just take Ryan Kelly out of the game. Tommy Bohannon would be our PG of the future.

I apologize to anyone reading this back and forth, it's boring for me too.

I just read through @laurakeeley 's twitter feed...I'd like to punch her in the face, although to her credit, she might be the most attractive person I've ever seen associated with Dook (and no, that's not saying much...). Her writeup of the game was pretty awesome.

You mean this Laura Keeley from Feb of 2012?

hat crap.....Gumby would be proud.

Okay, this made me laugh. Post game tweet from ACCSports.com writer Ben Swain:

Why is it hard to give guys like McKie & Harris All-ACC love? Nothing about Wake is memorable. I’ll forget them by the time I get to my car.

Doesn't he know that we just marched into Cameron and came away with a dominating moral victory!!!

No kidding. By the end of his freshman year the writing was on the wall. The Big Fundamentals was off to a dominating career. There is not one player on our roster that will come close to Duncan's career. Nor Childress's. That is not to say we don't have some good talent. But so do the other ACC schools. We are not talking Fab Five here. We have some good talent that, properly coached, will get us back into the upper half of the ACC.

Yeah, good distinction. That's what gmac and the buzzdickinners can't see - either that or they have no basketball intellect. And I did give some credit to the staff and team by saying they're playing the best they have in the Buzzdick Era in their halfcourt sets and that we had a better rebounding game. But you just cannot watch that game and not see that it was a woeful defensive performance. We were again terrible in transition, gave up many a bunny and rarely contested their outside shots. It is what it is. One of the hallmarks of the Buzzdick Era has been terrible defense. Truth be told (and I said it quite often back in the day), bad defense was also a hallmark of the Skip Era post Howard. I'm honest when I see something positive from this team. But the buzzdickinners cannot be similarly honest. Either that or they don't understand the sport. Or both.

Dude, we lost, by a lot. Generally teams that lose don't look good doing it. But sure the team has a lot to improve upon no doubt. That doesn't make my statements incorrect. I didn't say it was a good performance, I said it was a good experience and good effort. Some or our better teams have looked worse at Cameron. Record or not this team is much better team than the last two years. These players want to play, want to be coached and want to improve and want to do so together with this coaching staff. That wasn't the case before.

A loss is a loss, and there aren't 'moral' victories. But you can lose with grit or you can hang your head. This team chose the former. I don't see a final four team, but I do see a team that is improving. Even if these guys turn out to have a ceiling lower than we would want, I find them easy to root for. Sue me.

So that's your excuse for this game. That's fine, and I agree with your assessment of Dick. I wasn't overly impressed with them today either, and they did miss a lot of open shots. But remember that we were last in the ACC in FG% D going into today. And Buzzdick's Colorado teams were awful defensively. So please name 1 good defensive performance we've had this year. Or last year. Or the year before.

Which would make it our third worse team (by far) since 1990. All three of which have been coached by [Redacted].

It's a team full of freshman I would be astounded if they weren't improving. Still doesn't change the fact that this team is horrible and that [Redacted] hasn't won a single game which wake fans can be proud of.

moral victories are for losers. After reading about Mitchell this morning I almost lost my apathy. It's back.

None. Our defense has been terrible for years.

Which is exactly why I don't get some of these posts.

Ran into [Redacted] on the way to my car. A fan walked past him and said "Well beat 'em at home coach! He said "We'll see."

Bz is already accepting defeat.

If he had said, "Fuck you buddy" I would have been more impressed.
