I'll weigh in at some point, but I am curious to the pulse of this board. What is most important and what is least important to you with regards to our next head coach. Feel free to add some categories if you see fit. Here are a few that are certainly going to come into play.

1. Age
2. Experience (the first two are not mutually exclusive)
3. Winning history
4. Recruiting
5. PR
6. Education (or emphasis on it)
7. Cost
8. Regional ties
9. University ties
10. Staff (keep some of ours, entire new staff, etc...)
11. Previous employer (mid major HC vs. high major assistant vs. etc...)

Anyway, those are a few off the top of my head. I know we all basically want to have our cake and eat it too, but what is most important to you. I am not sure if this will take off, but thought it was an interest concept to discuss.

He must believe that the world was created 6000 years ago.

Only then will I know for sure that he is sane.

To me, I'd like to see a coach with head coaching experience mid-major or whatever, that is known as a motivator and has the ability to get a lot out of his player's. The X and O knowledge variance between coach's at the division 1 level is pretty small, I want the guy who knows how to get his player's to buy in and play hard.

1) Winning
2) Running a Clean Program

That's it. Don't care about pressers, relating to players, relating to students, how they dress, what they drive, old, young, gay, straight, white, black, boring, exciting, friendly, asshole...

Just win and run a clean program. The rest takes care of itself.

Now we finally know Wellman's handle.

I like a coach who can win national championships without ever breaking any NCAA rules, while graduating 97% of his players.....and don't tell me that's impossible.

It is categorically impossible in today's NCAA. Proving once again that you are a dope, Billy Packer

You just have to the right angry man willing to throw enough infantile attention-seeking tantrums on the sidelines.

The thread title suggests that you are asking what is most important in assessing a current coach. However, the OP is written as to suggest the question is related to what is most important is selecting a new coach. The two processes are different, of course.

Of the list in the OP, items 1-3 and 8-11 have no bearing on the assessment of a current coach. There, all that matters is success and running a clean program. However, many factors feed into 'success' - including: recruiting, developing and motivating players; relating to people - the fanbase, the media, etc.; understanding Xs and Os, developing game plans, establishing a successful "system", teaching said system and game plans to the players, adjusting game plans in-game; hiring, retaining, developing assistants; managing your recruiting to maintain a proper flow of talent... etc.

The ability to coach well enough to beat Stetson, for starters.

when you say "graduate 97% of his player" does that count players who leave early for the NBA or transfer? please elaborate.

I want a relentless recruiter who will publicly challenge teams like Duke and North Carolina and say that Wake Forest is on the rise and will be a force in the conference.

1. Does he look like this guy?
