Official ACC Basketball Thread: UVA beats Maryland in overtime!

How so? Way I see it, Clemson loses at Miami, GT loses @Miami and @BC, and Wake beats VT leads to a BC/Wake 8/9 game. Those would seem to be the most likely outcomes.

Based on the current numbers (not reflecting tonight's games) the chances of this happening are almost exactly 33.3%. This is probably the single most likely outcome

Isn't the 7-10 game on national TV?

Yes. Don't ask me why, but the ACC 7/10 game at 7:00 on Thursday is typically on ESPN. Would be hilarious if Wake Forest - Florida State was on national TV for a 3rd time.

All the Thursday games are on ESPNU this year. Surely will be non-stop excitement!

Okay just went through some things and probably still have this wrong. If all favorites win out here is the seeding for the 7th through 12th place:

7. FSU (7-11) although they are slightly more likely to go 8-10 than 7-11, but are underdogs in both individual games
8. BC (7-11) loses tiebreaker to FSU on H2H
9. Wake (6-12)
10. Clemson (5-13) wins tiebreak on H2H sweep of GT
11. Georgia Tech (5-12) loses tiebreak
12. VPI (4-14)

If the most likely "upset" occurs (GT beats BC) and the favorites all win:

7. FSU
8. Georgia Tech (6-12)
9. Wake Forest (6-12)
10. Boston College (6-12)
11. Clemson (5-13)
12. VPI (4-14)

In this case it's a three-way tie. Georgia Tech went 3-0 against Wake (2-0) and BC (1-0), while Wake and BC both went (1-2...split against each other, both lost to GT). Georgia Tech gets the 8 seed, so it then goes to the top of the conference to break the tie between Wake and BC. Wake beat Miami so we get the 9 seed and get to play Georgia Tech at noon.

I think after the BC upset over Clemson today Wake's chances of getting the 9 seed improved by a WHOLE lot.

On flip side, if Wake loses to VPI (second most likely "upset) and faves win, including BC beating GT, the standings end up:

7. FSU
8. Boston College (7-11)
9. Clemson (5-13)
10. Virginia Tech (5-13)
11. Georgia Tech (5-13)
12. Wake Forest (5-13)

In the four-way tie for last at 5-13 (for the second straight year with three of the four same teams, only BC moved up and Clemson moved down), Wake would be 0-5 against the bottom three other teams (flipside of last year when we were undefeated against them) and get the 12, Georgia Tech would be 3-3 and get 11th, VPI would be 4-2 and get 10th, Clemson would 4-1 and get the 9 seed.

There is probably something wrong with these calculations, but bottomline is if we do what we're supposed to we should be the 9 seed (beat VPI at home). If we don't, we will probably be the 12 seed. If we lose to VPI and GT upsets BC, there's a three way tie for last between Wake, VPI, and Clemson and we get the 12 seed since we're still winless against VPI and Clemson.

So lose out and we're the 12 seed, beat VPI and we're the 9. I think those are the only two real options. Of course we could beat State and VPI and finish 7th if GT beats BC and FSU loses to both UVA and State.

Actually all games are on ESPNU/ACC Network this year. I pray that the ACC Network will consist of Boston like normal because I don't get ESPNU and it's blacked out on my ESPN3.

So assuming our normal road loss to State, if we beat VPI we get 9th and the winner of BC-GT determines who we play in the 8 seed (we play winner) and if we lose to VPI we get 12th because we would be winless against all other bottom dwellers.

It's basically 9th or 12th. Only way we get 10th or 11th (and I'm still not sure if it could happen with tiebreakers but I don't want to go see) is if we beat State and then lose to VPI which is highly unlikely (currently 3.7%).

Odds of finishing:

2-0: 8.3%
1-1 (L, W): 60.7%
1-1 (W, L): 3.7%
0-2: 27.3%

So that alone provides at least a 60.7% chance we get the 9 seed (guaranteed if we lose to State and beat VPI barring GT or Clemson beating Miami at Miami). On the other hand we also have at least a 27.3% chance of finishing as the 12 seed.

Now this, unlike last year, would be last place.

Also I have no idea why I'm just sitting around looking at who will finish where in the bottom five spots of the ACC, I just love the ACC tournament.

Great BSD article by stonz. The last sentence was hilarious.

Go VT. I want Buzz to be last 3 years in a row!!! The man is consistent.

If we finish in last place in the ACC, even Ron cannot say that's progress. I'm hoping we lose out. Call me a bad fan, but if it means Buzz is gone, so be it.

And to think, it used to be so, so much better. It died a little after 2004 (great tournament, BTW)

FYI, if any of you are tuning in tonight and wondering why something is off....just in case it gets as crazy as it has in the past, we're letting in students without tickets at 6:30 as they are anticipating a lot of people bailing due to weather. So there may be like five or six thousand students if they get their peer pressure on

Grew up hating all things UNC, but rooting for them tonight. Combo of Maryland bailing the conference and them not deserving an NCAA berth has me headed down that long, dark road

I hate that feeling...

Rooting for UNC. Rooting against the Deacs. Shame what has happened to us.
