BZZ Out Rumor

Count me as another person who never noted a difference in my time at Wake between North v. South sports passion. If anything, as a kid who grew up going to the Vet for Eagles games I was more disappointed by our wannabe fratty tailgates that lacked any support for Wake athletics and our wine ad cheese crowds in the stands.

would you prefer wine and hummus?

I personally have nightmares about what would happen if we were to be good at basketball again, and GameDay was at the Joel. I always wonder if there'd be enough students to fill up the small portion of stands required.

This. And absolutely the last sentence. As much as I miss Skip, I miss Thomas K. Hearn even more.

If our students were "like Notre Dame" there wouldn't have been any games were there were less than 10 students there and empty student sections in the second half of football games. I witnessed their students first hand. I don't know if our students are spoiled, apathetic, "pansies", bored, too busy, don't care,...etc whatever. The only thing I know is that over the past few years student attendance has been declining at all sports and it all is not based on performance. Other than the last couple of years in bball, our athletic teams have performed at a historically high levels so its not "just because we suck."

Athletic attendance across all sports, pro and college, has fallen in the last few years. Not just at Wake.

Gotta love a guy in (presumably) the class of '15 talking about the history of the school and image. Christ, assuming he's about 18-19 yrs old, he's not even old enough to remember watching Childress, Duncan, or even Howard.

I know 15deac and he is young but he knows more about wake basketball history, and the history of the school itself, than most people on this board. But not nearly as much as he thinks he knows (typical for a sophomore I guess). He doesn't remember watching chill live but he saw Duncan and Howard.

He also probably has a better read on the make up of the student body than someone who graduated in '94 or '03

Why would you want to go watch a shitty team?

Wake kids are no different than any other fanbase. Why should they purposely buy a terrible product?

There are so many better things to do in college than watch crappy Bz basketball.

I ain't watching it on television either if I have something else to do.

To anyone who wants to call me a "fuckin Yankee" (and I am from upstate NY), I say 'damn right'! And I made WFU a better place with my Yankee charm.

In the words of David Allan Coe, "I am that Yankee's Rebel son!" :fu:

Now pass me the Jim Beam god dang it!

Yeah, I shouldn't make gross generalizations.

Do you not think we didn't have these EXACT same complaints about the students and fanbase in 1999-2003? Of course we did. That was what made Skip Prosser coming to wake in my junior year so great. He turned it all around. And he didn't do it by changing the fans.

The issue definitely isn't letting in kids from the North v. the South - most of the friends I made at Wake from the North were some of the most passionate. A lot of it probably has to do with the fact that we've expanded in national academic reputation faster than our national athletic reputation. If Hatch, the BOT, and Wellman aren't interested in making our AD's reputation rival that of the college's then there's no hope.

In the past, there was no real need to. We were an A+ mainly regional school, so you had people who had grown up either watching WF sports, or at least grew up knowing something about them so finding some way to connect people to the athletic department wasn't as big a deal.

I pretty much blame this on Hatch's ND-like image. #HatchOut

I love the Deacs, but come on, Wake Forest University should not be defined by sports--which makes our institution so great--we are not a degree mill with a professional sports team attached.

Winning solves most of those problems (ie: Duke basketball).

I never said any of that.

Sweet thread hijack, jackasses. Can we get back to fapping over how Bz and possibly Wellman are going to be gone in the near future?

Thanks tsywake! I was trying to make it sound as "red" as possible! Heh heh

But you'll know when I pass by you with my souvenir cup at Deacon Tower that it's some tasty Maker's Mark that is wafting in your general direction! :D

If more of your kind were like you, I would not have a problem with yankees. Unfortunately, you seem to be one of the very few that do not want the South to be just like New York.

See how that works and how dumb it is?

I would never want North Carolina or Georgia to be like New York! There are a lot of great things about where I grew up, but I prefer the graceful charm of real Southerners. Maybe I just like warmer weather after shoveling snow for 10+ years, but as you get older, that shit doesn't seem to matter. Without getting into stereotypes, folks in the south do seem to be more genuinely happy and friendly. But if you lived through winter after winter of miserable, harsh cold and bone-chilling snowstorms, you'd be miserable more of the time too!

But I will say this, having lived in ATL for 10 years now, I'd much rather be in the Cackalack when it comes to striking up a friendly conversation with a stranger. Perhaps ATL works for me cuz it blends lots of elements of both North and South with such a diversity of people here in this bustling metropolis.

Hopefully I haven't ruffled too many feathers because most of what I've typed this morning is with tongue firmly planted in cheek. We're all Deacs and I don't give a shit where you came from. Just happy there are others out there who love Wake Forest like I do. Even though I sometimes forget why. ;)
