Shaka turns down UCLA

You live out there, so you can probably answer this. How does the California economy affect coaches pay moving forward? It is a state funded school. I get that the athletic department has donors and they could probably pay whatever the hell they want but what is the general thinking with taxpayers?

Interesting take. Taxes in cali have to be higher than va.

Prepare for Gottfried to go to UCLA and then Enfield to NCSU where he will beat us like a drum for years to come.:tear:

it doesn't. ucla's bball coach will get paid.

He's hoping Ron will reconsider?

Seriously, tho...who thinks Shaka is cultured enough for the likes of Wake Forest, anyway? Doesn't he have facial hair? Ewwww!

Gary Parrish said today that UCLA may have a hard time finding a big name because they have to pay 3.5 to Howland, and won't have a lot to spend. He said they may go get an NBA coach, although that made no sense to me.

He also said as part of another conversation something about how sometimes you write columns that people question, but in the case of a column like the one he wrote on Jeff [Redacted], everyone agrees with what he said so it's not controversial. Guess everyone thinks it's common sense but Wellman.

On the books they can't theoretically pay $3.5M. However he's got a list that raised $138M to renovate Pauley. He could raise the money if they made the decision.

I think Guerrero and the people at UCLA are living in a past world where being UCLA would have been enough to land whomever they wanted.

Also, to give you an idea of how much more it would cost to hire Shaka in Westwood, the home on Stratford someone found for the Endfields was listed at about $1M in W-S. In Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Westwood, the same house would be $3-5M.

The taxes issue is an interesting question when it comes to figuring out where Enfield might end up.

$3.5M to Howland? What the heck was his buyout, since all I could find on his contract was two years left with about $4.6M total over those two years.

I was thinking about the pressure on UCLA to keep the salary under control because of political pressure but the taxes on Shaka out there would also be a consideration. Mickelson is considering moving out of Cali and if Shaka was only offered the same money he gets in Virginia then it is definitely a pay cut. There are a lot of consideration that go into job offers.

Income taxes in CA vs. VA will cost more. He's looking at something like $75,000-150,000/year. When you are talking about making $2-3M/year, these amounts can be negotiated.

Another consideration. Seems to me Texas is the place to make coaching money. Makes you wonder why UT isn't a freeking powerhouse.

UT is paying Mack Brown about $5.5M. Rick Barnes makes around $3,5M+ all sorts of bonuses.

at least we still have Billy Donovan

Shaka is either holding out for Duke or UNC or he just wants to stay at VCU forever. He will never be the coach at WFU.

UCLA is a better job than Duke and probably a better job than Carolina (pretty much have the west coast to yourself). He's going to be a VCU lifer.

Austin isn't a bad place to live either, and it's probably a pretty easy city to recruit to, especially when the local competition is College Station and Lubbock.

Disagree. UK, UNC, KU, Duke, UCLA, IU are the best jobs on brand alone, in that order.

The Duke brand is the Coach K brand. Belongs right next to IU.

I don't buy that the UCLA brand is any weaker than Carolina or Kansas. East coast bias imo.

Until the next guy fails to fill K's shoes (I expect a "family" hire will), the Duke brand is pretty damn strong. Talent on the east coast is just better right now. East Coast bias matters.
