Deacon Club Receptions: We Need Good ?s

I'm convinced Ron is just straight up making this stuff up now. Confirmed again this weekend, from a guy who would know, that Ron almost always has the largest ego in the room (unless a certain other AD employee is there). At this point, I think he's just telling lies to make himself look better.

keeper?

As if Self or Pitino is paying enough attention to cellar dwelling program in another conference to talk up particular players. Bullshit, as usual.

Are you insinuating that Self and Pitino wouldn't hang out with and talk frequently with a fellow winning coach? The hell you say.

" . . . for the past few years, we've been trying to plug Tanner into Riley's system, but now we're going to focus on the things that Tanner does well. . . "

No way! Who would have ever thought that we should focus on what Tanner does well. What a revelation! More lost opportunities thanks to Grobe/Lobo.

" . . . for the past few years, we've been trying to use the system of a draw play on third and long and punting when inside the 35, but now we're going to focus on the things that will help us win games instead. . "

"We've been doing the wrong shit for years, but we're going to do it right this year...promise!"

I heard it wasn't Self or Pitino, but Boeheim and Izzo. And from the pros, it was Jackson and Popovich. They all feel like they are in the same company when they talk about [Redacted]. Good one, Ron.

I guess but is Tanner's strength really throwing down field? If he's not accurate at 15 yards he's gonna be that much further off down field. He has no finesse and over throws on long patterns. That and our line sucks so he doesn't have time and he moves around in and out of the pocket for shit. This is not going to fix anything.

OGB asked if Bz needed to make the NCAAT to keep his job. Wellman said no and there were no mandates in place. It's not the answer we wanted to hear, but he didn't duck the question.

I hope Wellman is thinking "Bz needs to win XX games and make the NCAAT or he is fired", but he would be a fool to say that publicly. It just makes sense to publicly back the guy until the day he is canned. The question needed to be asked though to remind Wellman that we are not happy with our head coach and the state of our basketball program.

Then follow up with "how can we fire one coach for not going deep into the postseason, and not expect the new coach to make the postseason in year four?"

Or challenge the false dilemma that only Bz can provide culture: "Couldn't another coach have made the same changes to the program and won more games?"

I don't follow this stuff that closely but I wonder if he means we may run read option or bootleg stuff more, get Tanner out and moving. I agree with you that I don't think Tanner down the field is our answer.

Think of it this way. When throwing deep, it's like throwing it to a barrel. The deeper you go, the bigger the barrel. The time the ball is in the air, the greater the adjustment the WR can make, this opens the barrel wider. On short passes, it's like throwing through a window. you can vary the height, but little else. You must throw it into the WR body or lead him a little but anything else can't be caught. A long pass is like shooting a basketball (horizontal plane), a short pass is like throwing a dart (vertical plane).

Yeah, but the farther you throw the ball, the more a mistake is magnified. A big hook with a sand wedge might leave you on the fringe of the green. A big hook with your driver may leave you in a neighboring fairway.

I'm not sure why they think read option or bootleg is a strength or that our OL won't get his killed.

We're not hitting a little ball into a little cup in a fixed position. I put the blame on WRs who can't get open or out run the DB. Givens and Camp could run under Tanners bombs. Martin throws a nice deep ball. Besides Camp, our WRs can.......? Maybe we'll throw to the TE? Idzik was the best WR the past 2 springs, let's give him a chance.

I get that, just pointing out that while the long ball allows the receiver to make more adjustments, it also amplifies any inaccuracies. Not to mention is allows more recovery time for the defense. It's not like making long completions is inherently easier than short completions as your post seems to imply. The stats don't back that up.

Still the problem of Tanner getting happy feet and the O-line not giving him time for receivers to get down field. I haven't been to every game Tanner has played, but he has either over or under-thrown every deep ball I've seen him throw, by a lot. Many times those receivers were wide open. He's just not an accurate passer. If we start running him he will be injured by game 3. This has been a problem with most of Grobe-Lobo offenses. Just disjointed with no identity. Not using players how they should be, etc.

TF, I see your point about happy feet. At the Liberty game, I saw that he seemed to frustrate easily. It was Sanchez-esque. He was more comfortable in '11 with a better OL and 2 good WRs. The spring game was not encouraging on any front. I viewed the UNC game and never saw that team at all in the second half of the season.

Grobe went next (and was the only one who didn't stand up from his bar stool to speak).

I love how every year Grobe seems to get more comfortable at these things. Saw him with Skip back in 2004-ish, and Grobe was the buttoned-up straight man to Skip's loquacious comedy act. Saw him again in [Redacted]'s first year, and Grobe was relaxed and tan, rocking a polo shirt and looking like he'd spent a couple months on the golf course. Sounds like more of the same this year. If he's still around in a couple years, he may deliver his remarks sitting in an Adirondack chair, wearing board shorts and flip flops.
