Official 2012-2013 NBA Season postmortem

Yeah, you can't blame Duncan. He had 24/12 and 30 and 17 the game before.

Parker didn't score in the second half. Manu just isn't what he used to be. Green disappeared in the both game 6 and 7, and Pop didn't bench him when it was obvious he was forcing the issue.

The biggest mistake that will haunt the Spurs was when Pop benched Duncan in the final minute of game 6. The Spurs had the game won. It was over. But for whatever reason, Pop gave Miami a chance and they hit that insane 3 to tie. I knew it was over after that. And I just knew someone like Allen or Battier would hit a game tying 3.

FWIW, Duncan's averages for the Finals (apologies if Haas):

18.9 PPG
12.1 RPG
1.4 BPG
49.0 FG%
82.1 FT%

Who do you play in his place? My head says Diaw, but his +/- was actually the worst for the Spurs last night.

Man I'm bummed out by this Spurs loss. They worked so hard to get back to the Finals. Most disappointing losses for me, excluding "my" teams:

Spurs vs Heat 2013
Kings vs Lakers 2002 (the famous "rigged" game 6)
Blazers vs Lakers 2000 (Blazers entered Game 7 4th quarter up 13 pts)

For dynasty teams (Heat, Lakers, Bulls) in my mind I remember those championships as inevitable. But in reality all three were very close to losing several series.

the moral of the story is, never trust a fucking tarhole

LeBron should buy Ray Allen a car or something. If he doesn't hit that three, we're still talking about how LeBron checked out at the end of game 6 and bricked the game tying shot. He'd then have to deal with "can't hit the big shot" for at least all of next season.

But he hit it, they win the title, Bron gets MVP, and now he's the greatest of all time.

I still think Green was contributing somewhat even though his shooting was off. Spoelstra's decision to glue a defender to Green opened up Duncan to dominate the paint. Green (and Ginobili) had some awful, awful turnovers though.

Parker was just completely out of gas for Game 7. It's hard to blame him for playing poorly, it was obvious the guy just had nothing to give.

Or Green. He disappeared in games 6 and 7, but he did help win earlier games.

Disappeared? I wish he would have disappeared. Not only was he abused on defense, but without his TO's and horrible shots, the Spurs may have had at least 16 more meaningful possessions.

I think in the end what hurt SA the most in the series was the inability of Splitter and Fat Boris to punish the Heat from playing their "Lebron/Wade + Shooters" lineups. They were both basically offensive non-factors and allowed the Heat to play their best offensive lineups during every key stretch. Indiana had basically forced the Heat out of those lineups because David West just murdered Miller/Battier, and Splitter/Fat Boris just couldn't do that.

"Greatness" is kind of a murky word. He's definitely the best basketball player ever, though.

So, remember the conspiracy theories that surrounding the ESPN broadcast last night when Bill Simmons tried to talk about The Decision and the feed blacked out?

Not sure what to make of it, but the Grantland guys brought it up in today's Shootaround. Hard to tell if they're poking fun at the conspiracy theorists or poking fun at ESPN.

Tom Ziller's take on LeBron. Completely agree with the closing paragraphs, wanting to hear LeBron talk about The Decision last night.

When 'The Decision' was made, it was made by LeBron for the benefit of LeBron. Turns out the kid knew what he was doing.

Bill Simmons tried to bring The Decision up on ABC on Thursday before the network cut to black, and nobody asked LeBron about it when he was interviewed later. I really wish we could have heard what he would say about it in that moment, in the midst of celebration and defiance evident in his post-game interviews. Without his handlers, his smart PR advisers and his own typical self-restraint in his ear. Hell, we don't even really know how the question could have been posed. Was it an opportunity for LeBron to "U MAD" the world? A question meant to throw James off his balance, to get him defensive? Introspective?

The moment is gone. LeBron will be more exacting and sober (doubly so) in any comments about 'The Decision' going forward. But we know the truth about 'The Decision' now. Really, we all should have known from the beginning.
