Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

dv7, this a PK, right? I would have to think so, but Ive never opened a rulebook. Is it a no call due to incidental contact or did the ref just choke like he did all night?

Also, it didn't appear the line judge or the center ref were at a good angle. The Center ref was directly behind, which I think the live camera was as somewhat as well, and it looked like Stu went down WAY too easily. Tough call to make without having the angle and being in the box with Stu getting beaten to the ball.

So who starts Sunday? Jurgen has everyone guessing with his tactics. It seems that if he rests a starter he goes 90 the follow match (predictable)

Keeper:

Rimando (obvious)

Defense.

Parkhurst (No other option really)
Goodson or Gonzo (Can you bench Goodson who has been in the CB for the whole tournament and very influential in attack? If so, then how does JK justify to LA calling in Gonzo if he's not gonna play?)
Besler (Solid lock)
Beasley (Captain, lock)

Midfield:

Mix, Beckerman, Holden [Pick 2] (Leaning towards Mix and Beckerman since JK didn't play Stu after his last 90 minute run out. Thats all I really have to go on)
Bedoya or Corona (Has to be Corona, IMO since he was rested last night. But Bedoya tore up the Right side of Honduras)
Torres (No real option on the left except for Shea)

Fowards:

Donovan (Lock)
Johnson or Wondo (EJ if you ask me, but again, JK has a thing for playing well rested players and EJ went 90 last night)

----------------Rimando---------------
Parkhurst---Goodson---Besler---Beasley
----------------Beckerman-------------
-----Corona-------Mix---------Torres----
-------------EJ-------Donovan-----------

Thats my guess on what JK will do

----------------Rimando---------------
Parkhurst---Gonzalez---Besler---Beasley
----------------Beckerman-------------
-----Corona-----Holden--------Torres----
-------------EJ-------Donovan-----------

Thats what I would do

I haven't yet watched the game, but from what I see on the gif above, Stu went down "easily" because he was popped pretty hard in the mug.

Why the fuck is Goodson starting over Gonzo, anyway?

He's had a good tournament (not a goodson fan). Has contributed way more than expected going forward with multiple goals and had the key passes (secondary assist?) on two goals last night (not a goodson fan). It also seems odd to pull him in the finals after his solid tournament thus far (not a goodson fan).

Oh, I agree. I guess I meant why, in the first place, was Goodson starting over Gonzo. Omar was called in late, right? I guess that's the reason, but if Jurgen didn't plan on playing the guy he shouldn't have called him in.

Dropped "World Cup 2014" from the thread title to make room for gold cup final. If we don't make it to 11 Wins in a row, blame it on me. :gulp:

Should be good for a WCQ next cycle

Maybe against a Caribbean team. Can't see it against Central America or Mexico due to the number of people from those areas.

Seems the main reason for more and more games going west and north.

And I'm with dv on the no pen. Just a bit paranoid to think the US would automatically get called for that

Yeah wasn't thinking a HEX match. Has group stage written all over it

That field really sucked. I went to the Chelsea Club America game years ago, and the field was much better.

Is there a way to do it right, or is that what we're basically stuck with for indoor games?

It can be done right, but it requires laying the turf early and giving it plenty of time to grow, I think. I thought I read from Grant Wahl that Jerryworld didn't have prior events to this match, but they still only laid the turf about 3 days before the game, because they're idiots.

Anyone have a good explanation as to why our set piece defending is so terrible? We give up far too many goals on them including several in critical situations. I'm worried its gonna bite us in the ass soon.
