I'm just glad we can all agree to leave DDS off the list.

I don't much care for this thread. As I have noted before, one of the attractive aspects of a forum such as this is that there is no rank. Posters must be judged by the quality of their posts and not on the rank they have achieved in their careers. Everyone is equal here, and that's the way it should remain.

i know it wasn't really supposed to, but this made me laugh.

This. Lawyers are not doctors.

It is absolute fucking bullshit that "JD" or "Juris Doctor" was allowed to fly. The AMA, ADA, and the rest of the legit doctors should have put a stop to that shit.

20 years from now, I bet lawyers are going to be asking to be called "doctor." It'll start with the professors, and trickle down from there.

Such horseshit.

I have a JD and I 100% agree with this. Only MDs should ever call themselves doctors.

Wo, so not PhDs? I know plenty of PhDs who had just as rigorous academic/fellowship training as any MD.

DVM included as well but I don't remember seeing anyone claim to be a veterinarian thus far on the boards.

No, but to me it's more about consistency in use of the term and not about the level of required training to achieve a PhD or JD. When someone yells in an emergency "is anyone here a doctor?!" they aren't talking to the guy with the PhD in Economics (though I'm sure he's a very smart individual).

yeah, but it's not the fault of the people who earn doctorates that The Masses have dubbed MDs "doctors" in terms of what they call their profession.

I think there's room for people to yell "is anyone here a doctor" and still address PhDs as Dr. Smith.

The worst is someone with a Ph.D. in Nursing. Then they brag about how people now have to call them doctor. Uh, no. You are still a nurse. GTFO with that.

I wanted to get at boogity's claim on the politics board that 50% of posters on here had a doctorate. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he was including lawyers with JDs in that group.

I said "nearly half". 30 out of the 70 posters who responded so far could arguably be considered "nearly half" even if its not a mathmatical 50%.

I call my doctor (MD) by his first name. Does anyone else do that or do you call them Dr. (last name)?

In a professional setting, it's Dr. so and so. It's out of professional respect.

I also call my son's teacher M(r)s. so and so.

Some states have laws preventing anyone other than a physician identifying themselves as Dr. ____ in a clinical setting to avoid confusion. Between physicians, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, podiatrists, optometrists, nutritionists, etc., there are a lot of people using the title nowadays.

That's not to say they haven't earned it...just that context is critical.

Will have a JD by May 2014, as long as I don't flunk any classes.

Fairly certain at least 20 of the Yes votes are JD. I should have split it up by degree.
