Jim Grobe and the Wake Forest Way

That is a good point, we don't seem to hear any of that stuff publically any more. Maybe Wellman told him making statements like playing with your hair on fire, blowing snot bubbles, and wanting other teams to hate you, didn't fit the Wellman culture at Wake Forest???

I agree with this. But, Wake Forest put out a video after the win vs State that showed his pregame and postgame speech. It showed shades of that emotion from the early days - which was a welcome sight. It is a much better sight than watching him pick the fake grass on the sidelines every Saturday. Does any one have a link to that video?

I saw that too and commented the same thing. That is the Grobe we need, not just after a win. He had a look in his eyes and passion in his voice I haven't heard in awhile.

I dont think it is that difficult to for everyone to notice that the players feed of off that Grobe. Someone just needs to break through the inner sanctum Wall of Wellman to let Grobe know......
That video gave me some of those chills that have long been missing since the days of Riley and the fresh Deacs. They made an appearance at Clemson in the 3rd qtr in 2011 - but not for long....dammit.

I totally agree. I think Jim is embarrassed by the fail that has been our offense, and it took a revolt by the players many seniors to pull his head out of his own ass.

Jim has created the formula that we need to compete here. BUT his insistence on sticking with less than mediocre Coaches because of loyalty and his lack of balls in certain in game situations is maddening and harmful to the very program he built.

sat was completely different. The offense used short passing, wide splits with misdirection etc. not run, run throw long 3 and out. This looked more like the old days.

Additionally while I believe our recruiting has continued to improve overall we have slipped dramatically in one era where we should always be strong. The offensive line. Those kids from a personality standpoint tend to be more academically inclined, and can be developed more than other positions. Our online has sucked and coaching is to blame. We are always going to struggle to get the d lineman. Historically however we have been able to find and develop o lineman some ending up in the nfl. This of course all points to LOBO the weak link.

Now that the head seems to be out of the ass and we are competing on offense we may still have a year. The negativity around the program needs to break. This is a decent team with a good defense. Now we may have a coach again.

Excellent points Mebane and L+D. What made Grobe successful in sept. of '06, with a 3rd string QB, was he didn't ask Riley to do things that he couldn't do well. Also, he had great leadership on that team. LOBO asked these players to do thing that they couldn't do well and we lost 2 games we should have won. They spread out the OL and Tanner ran for 5 1st downs vs NCSU. The players believed in the game plan and it worked. Maryland will look at only the state game to know what they'll be going up against. Old Jim Grobe was back vs NCSU, let's hope he sticks around.

What a different approach in 2006. I think the intent was with Mauk to run a spread option type offense because that would've seemed to have fit Mauk, but we he broke his arm in the first game, instead of keeping it the same and having Riley run that offense, they went to something that fit him much better. Contract that with this year, where the coaches stubbornly decided to go to the option even though everybody knew that wouldn't play to Tanner's strengths. Anybody with one good eye could see in the first 5 games, Tanner didn't have confidence in it and didn't like it.

I think our problems started with an OL who couldn't cut block. Tanner would get the ball 5 yds deep, the DL would beat the blocks and we wouldn't get back to the line of scrimmage. GT OL avg less that 6'3" and 295 lbs, They cut block the first day off the bus and everyday for the next 5 years. Our tackles are 6'6" and 6'7" and 325. They are built for pass blocking. So, let them pass block. The wide splits on saturday gave Tanner natural running lanes and great vision down field. The results speak for themselves. They should lock LOBO out of the press box again.

The wide splits seemed to work great. I do wonder though, what's to keep the opposing defensive line from lining up bunched up and just run in between our O-linemen, especially in a passing situation?

Running to the edge and busting out for big gainers on the ground....

Throw to the TE. The 3 games were we threw to Bishop down field, we won. It took the safety out of the box, and made the LBs drop deeper. That's why nobody was there to tackle Tanner as he ran for 1st downs.

A friend of mine spoke to one of the referees in the State game after the game. The referee told my friend that Wake clearly outplayed State and the Wake coaches clearly out coached State's. Point of reference was Wake was running - Tanner Price - up the middle and passing up the middle. It seems that State only plays two linebackers and it left the middle open. The Wake coaches were expecting adjustments at halftime, but State did not adjust. So Price had his best game running and throwing - ever by some. I think you "Grobe is past his prime" people need to give credit where credit is due - maybe past due but I guess that is the issue.

It wouldn't take much for Maryland to adjust to what we showed against State. The question is if we're going to adjust.

Yeah, we've got to see what happens the rest of the season, but at least for the State game, Grobe made a great call by implementing the wide splits. There was a twitter thread where Lobo was asked about it and he tweeted that is was Grobe's idea.

So, maybe, just maybe, Doeren lost the game by refusing to adjust? Grobe certainly has lost many games by refusing to adjust.

Sounds like the young up and comer got took to school by Grobie. Glad he's still got it in him, just wish we'd see it more often.:noidea:

Grobe was acting like he was past his prime. He didn't adjust to the disaster of the spring game. He didn't adjust after BC. He didn't adjust the first 58 minutes of ULM. He didn't adjust the first 41 minutes of Army. After the NCSU, I hope he doesn't adjust. Do what works!!!

Grobe et al should be praised for the State game, just as they should be crapped on for every other game we've played this season. We ran an offense for 5 weeks that didn't work. For the second straight season we "implemented" a new offense in the off season that crashed and burned and had to be scrapped in favor of a "new" offense.

At this point people talk about being happy with mediocrity. We've got a ways to go to get to mediocrity.
