Official Coaching Search Thread

For the last few years Wake has been a "third quartile" FBS school - that is better than about 25% of the other schools, but worse than 50% of them. Grobe had Wake in the second quartile, and very close to the top 25% for a few years. The goal for the next coach should be consistent presence in the upper end of that second quartile, and occasional visits into the top quartile. That would be ambitious, but obtainable goals for the next coach.

Why? Have any of those guys had anything more than moderate success in any sport?

Because, just like every other field where big data has been put to use, it eventually leads to better results once people learn to harness it. We're still in the early stages of using it in sports IMO. Obviously there are still other things someone has to be good at in order to be successful as a head coach, just like any other job that leverages data, but it would be fun to be on the leading edge, especially at a school with a lot of perceived disadvantages.

Plus, going for it on 4th downs, which the data supports doing in a lot of cases, is exciting. Would suck for Kinal though.

RC Buford and Gregg Popovich have been all about using data and advanced stats throughout their run with the Spurs.

2&2 does not recognize anything that the Eagles and Red Sox do as "success."

i think Narduzzi is my first choice.

I'd prefer a guy with head coaching experience over a guy who will need to learn the ropes (although admittedly will have time to with next year almost guaranteed to be a wash either way) but both Lembo and Narduzzi are excellent choices in my opinion.

We can also tell you we have spoken with a source close to the football program that told us they would be very surprised if Morris had any interest in [the Wake Forest] position.

No idea how legit that guys is

Even if that's true, it's not very telling. Maybe he has a contact on the Clemson staff and calls him up - "Hey man, is Morris going to Wake?" "You know, I'd be surprised if he was interested." "Cool, thanks."

If he was interested, do you expect him to going around telling everyone?

Not sure either, but I'd be pretty shocked if (i) Wellman showed any interest in Morris, or (ii) if Morris reciprocated any such interest in Wake. Morris is already one of the 'hot' coordinator names in all of CFB, and has the salary to prove it. With Clemson's recent recruiting and incoming talent, plus the fact that his name has been bandied about for prior coaching vacancies (at least from what I recall), I really don't see Morris jumping at a head coaching gig like ours. Too much downside, too low a ceiling, and too little reason why he wouldn't just wait another year or two until some mid-tier Big 10, Big 12, or SEC program comes calling.

In some ways, it vaguely reminds me of Wake's hypothetical love affair with Shaka Smart with respect to basketball. It might be a great hire, but the applicant in question has little reason to leave a fluffy position for a job with downside when he can just continue to dominate in his current position and wait for a much higher-profile, higher-ceiling job to open up.

I'm officially #TeamNarduzzi

Same. Just feel like he has the attitude/ambition to be a real spark. I've talked about this elsewhere, but Wake should be risky with these hires. Go big or go home. The worst-case-scenario for us is, basically a 3-4 win season. It's difficult to do much worse than that given that we'll always schedule some patsies. Because the downside risk is pretty small, I say you look for someone with crazy upside. I think that's Narduzzi.

The only things against you guys getting Chad Morris is that he is actually pretty highly sought out right now, and simply the fact that he's not all about leaving Clemson. He's happy as far as we know, and we have some very high level offensive recruits coming in. (#1 QB, Plethora of 4-star WRs, etc.)

I think he's a better fit for y'all than any of the other candidates I'm seeing, but the chances he lands in Winston are pretty low from what I'm reading.

Who exactly is seeking out Chad Morris right now other than possibly Wake? Chad's offense as put up some big numbers on a lot of schools lesser talented than Clemson but when he plays the big boys (FSU/SC) he's only been able to produce 14&17 points this year. I still think he'd be a good get for Wake no doubt, but I highly doubt Wellman is interested.

Morris and Narduzzi are the two hottest coordinators in college football right now - their names are going to be linked to just about every opening out there.

The USA Today article wake20 posted is pretty good. I agree Lembo makes the most sense. Narduzzi or Orgeron would be great. I am thankful for what Hood and Rocco have done for the program but hiring either of them would be a huge mistake. After the Buzz debacle we need a good hire badly.

Yep. Morris makes $1.3mm with more 4-star recruits on the way. Narduzzi only makes $500k after a raise last spring; hopefully MSU doesn't give him a second raise in as many years.
