Food Trucks?

Overrated and not that good.

Depends on the truck.

There are several exceptional food trucks here in Durham. The good ones usually try to parlay their success into a brick & mortar location, but not always.

I'm a big fan of the trend, because it drastically lowers the barrier to entry for people looking to get their food out to the public. If somebody has a good idea and some talent but doesn't have the capital to open a restaurant, a food truck is a much cheaper option and can lead to more investment in your product.

Some of the outstanding food trucks/food stands in SF make pretty decent money, but it's usually seen as a springboard to a catering business or a shot at a bricks-and-mortar restaurant. We had one cater our wedding, and it was great.

The best food truck in SF just opened a popup in Berkeley, so I'm hoping that goes well for them.

Vast majority suck.

I will say that the good ones parlaying into brick and mortar are absolutely great, I love Palookaville in the A.

Move to a real city and try again.

In NC, I know that Asheville, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham have food trucks. I have heard rumors that there may be one or two in Wilmington, but cannot confirm.

Hard to say; Roy Choi pulled something like $2 Million (gross) in his first year running Kogi..not sure if anyone else has seen that kind of 1st year success though. He's expanded his fleet significantly, so he obviously found something that worked for him, though I have to believe he's the exception, not the rule.

There was an article several months ago that profiled a guy who just decided to do it. There's a lot of competition in DC and the regulations are trending against the industry. It said he made about $60K after all of the licensing fees, parking tickets and other overhead. And it was a LOT of work.

That's not bad for a first year start-up in such a competitive industry. Hell, he made money.

There are a few in the Wilmington area. Poor Piggy's (BBQ) is probably my favorite. Flaming Amy's Burrito Barn has one that is pretty awesome too though. There are a few other smaller ones that I have yet to try.

Catch, Flaming Amy's and Patty Wagon came out to a Memorial Day weekend thing at Matt's parents' community this year. We only managed to hit Patty Wagon based on our timing, but it was pretty good.

How many of you live in cities where there are 1 or more of these operating? Obviously if its a big city (NYC, DC, Boston, LA) there are many, but what about smaller cities/towns like Winston for instance. There is 1 where I am (Upstate SC), but wish there were more.

Anybody got any idea if there is any money in operating one?[/QUOTE]

The current issue of Atlanta Business Chronicle has a writeup on them with information on average sales, costs, etc. I just skimmed it but I think it said it is a 15 million dollar market in Atlanta that is likely to double in the next several years. Not sure how profitable they are but that may be in the article (didn't read closely).

Greensboro has a few. The Azteca Mexican place has one and I think there is a Korean BBQ one too. Never eaten at either but seen the Mexican one outside of the Blind Tiger #drunkbarfood
