Wake - Clemson Game Thread

Prosser had the ability to connect with the students and fans. He had wit and charisma something that has been generally absent since the days of Bones McKinney. "Gentleman" Carl Tacy was also a good coach but never connected with the fan base like Prosser...Unfortunately, today we have an individual (Bz) who is incapable or unable to extoll emotion except one of contempt from the fan base. That blame lays at the feet of Wellman...

Obviously, Skip would not have gone 1-15 with those guys. Neither would [Redacted], or any other coach. I've already said that Skip won most of his games when he had better players. However, none of the three guys you mentioned played more than two years....so if that's the way you are going to build a winner, the building never stops. And some would argue that bringing in 1 & 2-year players eventually leads to the kind of situation that resulted in [Redacted] being brought in here in the first place. I guess it comes down to what kind of price one is willing to pay to reach the top in the world of college basketball today. It's just not worth it to me. I would rather lose with four year players than win with two year players.

bob, there's no justification for bringing in Buzz, and there's just not much point in losing. We should either compete to win in the ACC or leave the league. What we are doing with Buzz is cheating the whole Wake community, starting with the players.

I'll laugh my ass off if we lose at Va Tech. It could very well happen. I think it'll be a dogfight.

And that is why you are a loser. Some people actually want to win.

Carl Tacy, meanwhile, went 1-17 on the road his first three years in conference, and 2-22 his first four. Guess he wasn't all that great at winning games without talent, either.

Moto and Cav looked pretty good today. CMM/Devin/Moto/Cav should all be nice players next year under a good coach.

Yet Cav was benched.

Yeah, bad mistake. Moto was the best out of Tree/Travis/Moto on KJ I thought. Given that we could have tried CMM/Coron/Moto/Cav/Devin late in 2nd half I think.

We have a huge collection of elitist assholes on this thread. If the team wins, it's in spite of the coach....but if the team loses, it's because of the coach. Total assholes.

Says the asshole who brags about how many thousands and thousands of dollars he has given Wake. That's not elitist at all.

Played too much Tree late. Clemson went right at him. McDaniel abused him. Tree's really not a good defender. He is disruptive but he takes too many chances. He does not play his guy straight up and he cannot hold his position well enough to rebound. I like him but in measured doses. I would like to see a few minutes with Moto, Cav & Devin as the front line & Codi/Carron at guard.

Thought the same thing. Now that Moto has improved his shot selection, I would like to see him at the three. It probably will create some match-up problems.

I mean, the three spot is just kind of a wash, IMO. Travis probably hurts less at the end of the day than playing Tree would... Playing Moto at SF probably yields similar results. Dude can't shoot and his instincts are just better suited for the post at this point.

All of this is to say - be careful what you wish for. Passive Travis, at the very least, allows our (presumably) better offensive players to see touches that they might not see otherwise. (This brackets the obvious concern that these players do not really do much with the touches anyway, but given our inability to score, who's counting?) He also plays better D, both individual and team, than anybody who you'd replace him with...

I agree with you Strickland that 2013-2014 level McKie should still be playing as long as the situation doesn't fall apart further. Better than Tree. No other options. Too thin up front to play Moto/Cav/Devin at same time very much even if you wanted to.

I think today @5 min left could have been a unique chance to try Moto/Cav/Devin at same time just because Moto was doing well on KJ and Cav was rested and we needed offense.

How the hell does BKF have enough pos rep to even post on these boards? What a clown.

The brilliance of Prosser was that even when his team's were bad you still believed in the guy and rallied around him because of his persona and charisma. Wellman hired the antithesis of Skip in Jeff [Redacted]

Well said.

Went to the game today, so I couldn't hear the broadcast... But I had a few observations. I am firmly "buzzout" FWIW.

We played good defense most of the game... Especially the first half. Not sure how much of this was due to Clemson only having one real offensive threat.

Refs seemed to do a pretty good job... Though the Clemson fans didn't agree. I was surprised we didn't get to the line much in the first half, but we certainly got our share of calls in the second half.

I don't think Cav played as well as most of the commentary on here seems to suggest. He scored a few times to start the 2nd half, but it looked like he got bailed out on multiple occasions. He got pushed around most of the game. And I'm a huge Cav fan. My wife (who never watches the games with me) asked why he was playing for us when he looked so uncomfortable on the floor. Not his best game... Though he seems to be the only one able to feed Devin the ball in the post.

I used to think Madison Jones could be a decent PG for us (for spells). The last few games have made me change my mind on that.

I thought Thomas looked pretty good... Should have fed him more.

Our offense was terrible. Clemson was athletic, big, and aggressive... But we were running some kind of motion offense that had no effective picking. Was far too easy for the Clemson defenders to just follow their man around without getting held up at all. No way for Coron to get any shots if he's not coming off a decent screen.

I have no idea if Travis is hurt or not. His game has always been the type where you don't feel like he needs to dominate the ball to have an effect on the game... But he disappeared far too often today.

Codi needs to work on his shot (and shot selection).

I wasn't ticked about [Redacted]'s substitutions down the stretch. I don't think Cav needed to be out there... He wasn't playing particularly big today. Maybe Bz felt Mckie was hurt. I agree that Rountree maybe wasn't the right guy to guard McDaniels... But Moto wasn't having much success, either. We just got beat at the end. They made offensive plays (at least McDaniels did), and we couldn't get any good shots. Yeah, Bz takes some of the blame (he always does)... But we needed someone to step up down the stretch and it didn't happen.

Good road effort... But a loss is a loss. Especially painful because it was a winnable game.

Just my 2 cents.
