Best Beer States

Russian River makes some OUTSTANDING stuff. And I love Lagunitas. Lagunitas Sucks is spectacular.

Seems like a general consensus around OR, MI, CA and CO. I have to agree. Note that MN has some outstanding small and regional brews as well. Surly, Summit, Fulton, Harriet, etc. are all really solid. Summit has sort of branched out and gone a bit more mainstream than the others. Harriet I think is especially good. I frequent this place just up the street called Tilia and they always have a solid rotation of about 20 craft beers from around the world on draft. OR, MI, CA and CO are always represented. I'm a big fan of Two Hearted Ale by Bell's - a MI brew.

Michigan is likely a top 5 just with Bells, Founders and Jolly Pumpkin - Founders possibly my favorite beers overall.

Top 6, in some order, California, Oregon, Colorado, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania. Cali is likely #1 - Russian River, Bruery, 21st, Firestone Walker and Lagunitas just off the top of my head.

Maryland, NC, Florida are in the next tier. Probably some I am missing.

Florida is not on the same level as NC. Get that shit outta here.

Do you get any Boneyard (from Bend, OR) in SF? If you see it you should give it a try. They make some world-class stuff, but it is extremely difficult to find outside of the pacific NW. The Suge Knight Imperial Stout is the best beer I've ever had.

yeah we do. generally on tap, but i'll look out for it in the bottle as well. i'm so spoiled w/ what's available at my grocer i rarely venture to a beer store, but i may have to venture out and try some new stuff.

Cigar City is pretty legit, other than that, meh

there'sa lot in the tampa area that's really good. dunnedin, cigar city, and more popping up every year. id take cigar city over any nc beer but nc has quantity imo.

I'd probably put Oregon tops. California, Michigan, New York, Colorado somewhere after that.

Wisconsin does some amazing stuff, but distribution is really bad for them. You basically have to go up there to drink.

the thing with cali is there is just so much quality. widely distributed cali beers that are great: lagunitas, firestone, anderson valley, 21st amendment, sierra nevada, north coast, bruery, bear republic, stone, and green flash. those are all beers you can find pretty much nationwide. shit's cray.

Racer 5 is one of my faves. anyone had the Racer X?

this is my current jam:

For me its lack of access - outside of Duck Rabbit, I never see anything else - and I am not all that thrilled with that. Foothills is good when I go back to Winston (rarely-ish) or some of the Asheville stuff when I visit my people, but there is limited access to it outside of NC - so me putting it in that tier is only based on what i get the 1 time I go back to NC each year.

this is a good point. asheville is a great beer city, but there's zippy nc beer distributed here. granted i dont think any of the fl breweries distribute here.

Dang - forgot about Green Flash - still not sure they make a bad beer.

per capita, Vermont is probably #1.

In 2011 and 2012, the Brewers Association ranked Vermont as the state with the greatest number of breweries per capita. Using the 2010 US Census population estimate of 62,741 and 26 breweries, there are one brewery for every 24,067 people.

Alchemist (heady topper) and Hill Farmstead in a state with a population of just over 600,000.
