Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

"The dream is dead" needs to be this generation's "officially unofficial." Unless, of course, the dream is actually dead.

A safe pick is almost required in this case. Things are extremely dire at this point. Staring down a decade of futility in basketball, which again is the single most important thing to Wake Forest, is not where we want to be. We had a chance to take a risk after Dino and it blew up in our face. Risk is off the table now.

it can't get much worse

I agree with this. We simply cannot endure another 4-5 year run of futility. There is going to be a power vacuum at the top of the ACC in a few years as K, Roy, Boeheim, and Pitino all retire. We have a much better shot of stepping up as a program from a stable position than from the bottom of the conference.

?Why is Manning under the floor boards. Why would he be an atrocious hire?

He has NC ties
He was an All-American in college
He was a long time NBA player
He has coached as an assistant with some of the best coaches in the country
He is a great big man coach
He wants to play sound defense that drives a transition offense (i.e. he likes to run and that's fun to watch)
People who have worked with him think he is a great person and coach

I understand both these points, but I was saying Manning over Mack, and not over Shaka, Marshall, Howland, or Archie.

I'm not even sure Mack would consistently get us to the Sweet 16 level. Maybe once every handful of years? His track record at Xavier is "fine." I just think Manning's "high reward" potential is large enough to off-set the safeness of a boring pick like Mack.

Mack has been to the Sweet 16 2/5 years at Xavier and has the best class in school history coming in. Not sure why we would question his ability to do the same at Wake.

I'd rather gamble and bring in Manning then take a "safe" pick on Mack that would probably have us max out in the Sweet 16. Now, winning a couple games in the tournament would be fun... but winning 4 would be even more fun.

Don't get me wrong... I want to be a Final Four team... but after the last decade I would not mind being a Sweet Sixteen team.

Danny Manning would be an absolutely atrocious hire in nearly every imaginable aspect.

Why? I'd much rather have him than Mack. Mack came across as totally classless in the Holloway incident with Cincy a few years ago (Cronin came across way better). Manning has done a good job with Tulsa in a very short period and was reportedly a good recruiting assistant at KU before that. He may be riskier than Mack, but his ceiling is much higher.

Even Mack's biggest advocates have to force themselves to get energized to defend his resume. NOT A GOOD LOOK

Just received some unexpected great news regarding something unrelated to this coaching search that finally put me in a terrific mood. Wanted to share and put some positive VIBES on this thread.

Didn't we argue these points 5,000 posts ago? He has 2 years coaching experience in a weak conference. That's not the kind of hire you make after 4 years of futility that lowered the value of your program to the point mainstream media and former coaches calls your program the 12th best in the conference.

We had a 15 year stretch where WFU was the only ACC team to NOT have a losing season. We need to get back to those days and gambling isn't going to do that. We HAVE to have a BIG NAME hire who brings excitement to recruits, media, and the demoralized fan base.

We hire Danny Manning and most of those would shrug there heads and forget about WFU forever. IF that happens, maybe I get Shaka as my coach anyways cause I'll be looking for a new f'n team....

I hope you don't like Howland if you focus on this in Mack's candidacy.
