Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

I just posted "#ManningIn" on my facebook page and my wife posted "Please tell me this is all over".

HAHAHAHA

IF we finally make the tourney again at some point, and advance at least one game, prepare for an obvious collision course with KU. Selection committees seem to love the student-mentor matchup.

But hey, at least then we would've made it to the tournament and advanced a game.

I was never a big Mack guy, but I am somewhat confused that he either turned us down or Wake was more interested in Manning's résumé.

Dixon/Bennett and Brey/Hamilton could probably be swapped.

Yeah it gets jumbled in the middle...you have guys like Larranaga with recent success, Brey with a long-term span of sustained success, Hamilton who turned FSU into a contender and coached them up really well this year, Buzz who has had some pretty good sustained success, and then Dixon who has had Pitt in the national spotlight for a while but hasn't been able to get over the NCAA hump.

Bennett had UVA as a one seed this year and claimed the regular season and ACCT.

I swear Biff runs a gif website or something

Or a 4 v. 13 matchup between Wake and Tulsa.

What a let down. Going from thinking we had a chance to Shaka to having to talk ourselves into the possibility that Danny Manning might do a decent job.

LK, based on your post, we must assume that there was some level of interest from Shaka. Otherwise, we wouldn't have even had an opportunity to try to sway him, right?

Time for the athletic department to hire someone who can sell what Wake has to offer instead of LOWFers.

If Clawson somehow fails as the FB coach, he'd be a great hire for AD. Or maybe make him Coach/AD as was popular back in the '80s at some schools.

Yeah, it's a big plane.

With level flooring and a more comfortable cabin than some of the smaller jets. The King Air 200 is a nice way to get around. There is a company employing the "net jets" style business model but with a fleet of King Airs.

Yeah they also wait for the almost official word aka when the press announcement goes out.

Been hearing for a couple days that it was Manning's job to lose. Tough to verify stuff obviously.

Where was THIS scoop dammit?

And everybody has voiced my opinion on the hire. I'll give him a few years, but Wellman screwed the pooch on this one. He could turn into a good coach but we needed a guarantee, not a roll of the dice. If Manning doesn't turn into a good coach then we are in a place I don't want to even think about.

There is no way manning is objectively better than mack who was favored by some big time spender according to CBS. If this is Ron v those boosters I hope the boosters get his resignation.

if he's the hire go manning but ron still royally fucked us.

He was busy with another job the first 12 years of his career.

Exactly

Its not Shaka, its not Marshall, hell its not even Howland.

But Jesus Fucking Christ people its not the worst hire in the world. He's way above Turner or White or other guys who have never won anything.

Also if recruiting is the most glaring question, what's to think he can't bring in an A-level guy to recruit with him? A gig as a lead assistant/recruiter with someone as famous as Danny Manning, at an ACC school, sounds like a great gig for a young go-getter.

Something some people need to grapple with is that $ doesn't always get you exactly what you want.

Dan Pink's "What Motivates Us" states that $ incentives actually decreases performance. Purpose, Autonomy, & Mastery are what drive people according to research. If Smart has those satisfied at VCU and he is already paid well, I don't blame him for not jumping ship. I actually admire him for it.

The other thing we need to grapple with is that Wake is a prestigious university and we're not going to tolerate a certain sense of standards just to win. That's what makes Wake different.

Smart seemed like a good fit. Howland & Marshall & Buzz did not.

Can all three coach? Absolutely, but that doesn't mean they're a great match.

I disagree about Smart. I do not fault him for whatever decision he makes, but he is basically just not giving up what amounts to a $1M+ annuity check unless he lands a blue chip job. I don't blame him, but there's nothing especially praiseworthy about it either.

And Wake is not that different. There are plenty of universities that are nationally competitive in both academics and athletics. We either need to figure out how to hang with the Dukes and Stanfords or GTFO of the ACC.

Particularly when having a dishonest incompetent AD is part of your hiring package...
