Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Before what's his face was fired (resigned whatever) people on this board were touting White and Masiello. Danny Manning is very comparable to those two. We all fell for the Shaka dream but back to reality and Manning is on par for what many thought a month ago. At least I didn't have to google his name like I did the last hire just to find out who he is.

169th in offensive efficiency against terrible competition. Woof.

I'm certain Manning still has plenty of his NBA money left in the bank. Not sure if he's gonna base his final decision on an extra $500,000 a year that we might offer.

By the same logic a "strong financial package" wouldn't keep him in Tulsa when an ACC job is available.

What have the other B List people done? Remember I don't have him as a Top 3 choice. His track record isn't just about as a coach.

Once you get past Smart, Marshall, & Howland - those were really the only possible home run hires, it becomes a crapshoot. Why not take a shot at the coach with a "big name" and pedigree.

Miller - caught lightening in a bottle and got to play tOSU & Syracuse on their downslope and then another high seed. His run was somewhat lucky. His record at Dayton until that run was very Purnell/Gregory like.
Amaker - does well at Harvard with recruiting advantages and that's probably perfect for him. don't believe his success there would translate to Wake
White - couldn't win the conference tournament
Turner - couldn't win the conference tournament
Masiello - UK grad not quite; also does not like coaching against Pitino

I could keep going, but anybody other than the top 3 is a somewhat risky hire. I think Manning is more risky than some of the others, but the higher the risk, the higher the potential reward (as well as bust).

Am I missing any evidence outside of a flight to Tulsa?

Winning big "one games" is pretty important in the grand scheme of college basketball.

And from your answer La Tech hasn't beaten anybody of any significance in Mike White's tenure. GOT IT.

Won @ Georgia who was 8-1 in SEC at home, @ Oklahoma. Won @ Florida State in 2013.

La Tech would have likely been above .500ish in the ACC this year which is astounding considering the program.

BTW..I am not that down on Manning at all. My excitement moving forward will be determined by the rest of the staff and by recruiting momentum.

Downright silly to say that he's "way above" White though, based, as far as I can tell, on a single game.

Dude we should have been bubble THIS year. We crapped the bed. The reason Bzz was fired is because he didn't MAKE the NCAA this year.

Now with Travis gone, etc. and a team full of Jrs. I think the bubble is a reasonable expectation. I also agree with, gulp, RJ, that Manning does need time to bring in some of his own players. He needs an impact recruit. And he probably needs some of these rising Jrs to think they won't play and should consider leaving - although he need not shove anyone out the door.

Last years team was primed for bubble contention. A lot more question marks next year as you explicitly mention in your caveated bubble dreams.

You are the first person I've heard that has said that...really?

I don't know that we necessarily should have been on the bubble but we did have some pieces to put us close.

By the same logic you would have thought that Shaka would have jumped at the 'strong financial package' and the lure of the ACC that we offered.

Am I missing any evidence outside of a flight to Tulsa?

Not necessarily. Several people have intimated that Manning has been on the radar for a bit and people who have had sources throughout (LK for one) seem pretty convinced that this is basically a done deal.

Heard a couple days ago about Manning from a couple people and that it was just a matter of time.

This fits the billing - of course Manning can always still say no.

I'll go ahead and predict that a press conference is going to be announced at 2 and held at 4.
