Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

http://m.espn.go.com/ncb/story?storyId=10496220&src=desktop

Manning took a player who was kicked out of St. Joe's for stealing laptops and he is accused of rape while at Tulsa.

It really cracks me up how the anti-Manning people are going out of their way to make his limited but impressive tenure at Tulsa sound worse than it is. He had a young team and lost some bad games in December but ended up turning it around and ending winning 11 straight and this is some evidence of him being a bad coach.

I know the fat lady is not singing yet, but I have one major (non-resume) concern with Danny Manning.

The only way Wellman can salvage a "non-home run" hire and satisfy the fan base is by replicating the Clawson rollout. Clawson seemed genuinely excited, if not giddy, to be coming to Wake Forest, and it was endearing to witness. Manning's public back-and-forth might be shrewd business, but it is bad politics. I am not going to believe him when he stands behind the podium and says, "this is a dream job for me."

Regardless, I will swallow my pride, cross my fingers, wear my pajamas inside out, and pray that he can at least get us back to Square One.

Mannings head coaching experience is a little light obviously, but his time with self on the kansas bench is absolute top shelf assistant experience.. I'm gradually getting more and more #manup!

So what did he say?

Something like,

'I'll make the decision when I am ready'. Almost as if he does not owe us a timely decision...just struck me as unnecessarily curt and a bit haughty. But maybe it is just the way I took it.

Oh this is wonderful

I know it was posted by others, but when Chris spouts shit claiming his history at Tulsa is God like, let's put this Manning guy in full perspective. He sounds like a scandal waiting to happen and I'm blown away wellman is going to go for this after his 4 year culture fest.

This is my concern. Where is Howland? We heard he was interested, Ron liked him, and Marquette hired Wojo. The only other potential competition we have is Cal. Why aren't we looking at him?

Not everything that is said in public during contract negotiations is true - entirely possible that somebody from the Howland camp leaked that Wake was his first choice as part of an attempt to get more money elsewhere.

I understand some some people are miffed by the supposed leaks coming from the Manning camp. If Manning turns us down then they will go down as classless moves by guy trying to squeeze money from his current job. But, if his plan was to accept the position from the begining, then he has done a great job of putting Wake Forest in the national conversation on the eve of the Final Four. Heck, Wake is one of the headlines on Espn.com right now.

Remember when Wake got the 9 seed on tie-breakers (because they beat the 10, 11 and 12 seed) two years ago, yet everybody wanted to say they were really last? Weird how people are playing both sides of that now.

The ChrisL we know and love is back!

I am probably in the minority, but I don't get the hate towards how Manning might be playing both Wake and Tulsa to get the best deal or force someone's hand in the deal - at the end of the day, I want the guy that wants to fucking win, and win badly, on the court, on the recruiting trail and in business. More power to him if he thinks he can pull it off. The idea that he is breaking some unwritten rule, or that he should somehow be more of a gentleman because he is dealing with Wake Forest is bullshit to me... it wreaks of elitism and pettiness on our part. Sure, you can call bush league on him, but I am sure there are plenty of us that in real life have tried to play both sides very carefully to leverage the best opportunity. Shit, I would assume that Wellman (and every other AD) plays the same game... that said, I recognize assuming anything positive about Wellman is wishful thinking at best. Perhaps that is the most frustrating part of this whole "search" is it really looks like Wellman is getting played over and over...

Wellman already screwed the pooch on the roll-out. Never should have let DM on the plane without an agreement and before he'd said adios to his players in person.

So basically everything that was leaked by everyone else was done intentionally with purpose. But what we leaked was the result of gross incompetence or an irrational view of what was acceptable to the fanbase

I feel worse than I did during the bzd days bc atleast then I had hope

Wow. Nice Ronny.

That was all of two months ago. Maybe this deal dies after all.

Manning is a big personality. Kind of funny watching Wake fumble around with it. Hope Wellman understands where he really stands.

The truth of the matter is that people were expecting a more established name. That is the crux of the issue with Manning. Given his short track record, it's hard to determine if he will be a good coach or not. There are a lot of variables involved in coaching. I think most people will accept it and support Manning if/when he is hired, but right now it is hard to be completely sold on this hire, when comparing it to the higher profile names that were discussed excessively at the beginning of this thread.

What other potential candidate in ANY schools search outright said that X or Y school was pursuing him. It isn't a bullshit wake forest elitist attitude. This was the ONLY incident of this nature so far this offseason.

100% agree. I don't see a graceful way out of this PR blunder, but here's to hoping.
