Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

It's also time to buy tickets and go support these guys. No more empty Joel.

I am hoping for the best, but I'm not going going to put any money behind it. I was watching anxiously for a sign that Shaka/Marshall/Howland was coming so I could make the call to line up season tickets. Now, meh... Maybe in a couple of years.

There's no doubt that the way the Manning camp has handled this ordeal has been lacking in class. But, I guess he's our classless jerk now.

This is just so sad. I hope the powers that be are seeing and recognizing the hypocrisy that our AD is displaying. With the hire of [Redacted], I was disappointed. This time I'm just depressed.

I think everyone is rightfully disappointed we didn't get a Shaka or one of the other obviously top names who have longer track records of success, but most seem to be getting behind it and ready to rally and support Manning and the team again. I think Manning has to completely understand that as well and only looking for a chance to be successful and be supported through what will likely be another season of mediocre ball. His first recruiting class will be a huge harbinger of what to expect. Especially if he is on TV with Sir Charles et al. I would think Barkley and Anthony will be singing his praises seeing a former player given this opportunity. A lot of positive momentum to be gained out of the chute.

Go DMann!!!

Bz - history of being a loser
Manning - history of being a winner

I'll take my chances with the guy who has the history of winning

I don't quite understand some of you. You want is to go after the big guns (which by all accounts we did), but now can't accept a good hire because you were hoping for the greatest hire.

It is hard for me to fault Wellman in this search. It certainly took longer than was comfortable but in the end I think we got a good prospect of a coach. He carries risk but he has a lot of positive qualities. This is not a [Redacted] hire. We conducted a national search and hit a solid double.

If you read between the lines it seems like we targeted mostly all the right people, in a logical order, and got the best candidate we could. The haters keep bringing up Ben Howland, but he didn't get looks at Marquette etc. either so there is likely something there. And it isn't ridiculous for an Ath Dept not to pursue one candidate because they don't think it is a fit.

I understand the disappointment because it isn't a home run, but be logical here. We basically got the best we could given the status and current state of the program. At least we didn't hire a coach that we know sucks.

I'm pretty sure Howland got a hard look from Marquette.

Welcome to Wake, Coach!

I consider myself to be cautiously hopeful! WEEEEEEEE!

Except that that Wellman is proving to be one of the major reasons we swung and missed on better candidates. Sure, I can't fault him for swinging, but I can fault him for missing. He likes to be on control, so he gets to answer for the results. The Dino hiring was botched, the Dino firing was botched, the smearing of Dino's name was botched, the hiring of Buzz was botched, the keeping of Buzz was botched, the firing of Buzz was botched, and now we find ourselves, a historically Top 25 team in the ACC (with all of it's current advantages of TV money, exposure, best teams/coaches, etc), unable to hire or even get the ear of more proven candidates.

I think Manning was the best Wellman could do. Good for him for doing his best. Pats on the back all around. The problem is that I think someone else could have done better. We are where we are, content with Manning, because Wellman did his best for the last 8 years and it wasn't good enough. The program is at a historical low because of the way he has handled it. Manning is the best we could get because of that.

I generally feel the same way. While you could get on Wellman's case for apparently not being able to sell the job well enough, these coaches are shrewd guys with presumably smart agents, who are going to judge the opportunity rationally. I don't imagine any amount of salesmanship is going to make much of a difference.

That said, as has been pointed out, it's absolutely Wellman's fault that he allowed [Redacted] to make the program so unattractive. I really believe the scholarship logjam had to be a major negative for Shaka, and possibly the reason he didn't come. If Shaka didn't think he could turn it around quickly why not just have another great year at VCU and take the next major offer?

Which accounts? Why is it so hard for you to fault Wellman? Who the hell else are you going to fault? This mess is all his.

This attempt to correct it is pathetic. He should be fired now.

Shit I'm actually optimistic about Wake basketball again. Good luck coach.

Let's get it Coach Manning!

Don't listen to the haders

I expect us to go 10-23 next year... 2-16 in conference. as much as i am hopeful that we will be better I fear that Wake Forest Basketball is dead forever. Considering we are in a stronger than ever ACC. I'm sure Manning will be a fine coach but i just think we're done.

I hope I'm wrong...

Got a WF mention on Cowherd ... panning the Seahawks for whiffing on Curry from Wake Forest
