Tell me about European football clubs

Support an MLS team. It's great, they have matching kits and everything.

In all seriousness don't support Everton. I love them like I love the Deacs but they will always, always, always let you down. Like clockwork. Like the Tigers bullpen. Like the Lions front office. Like an escalator. Always.

Like the Buffalo Bills? #TuffaloCalloutThread

Borussia Dortmund would be a fun team to root for

Nothing wrong with picking a team for every major country, and Dortmund would be an amazing team to follow. I'm tied to Berlin since I saw a game there last fall, but they seem to be a perennial mid-table team and will probably never achieve anything great for a while, so Dortmund is my second favorite Bundesliga team. Check out some Youtube videos of their stadium, it might be one of the best in the world.

While we are on the topic, who does Bayern Munich have that explains how good they have been the past few years?

Spend loads. Love to talk about the past. Killed Juventus supporters in the 80s which prevented English clubs from playing in Europe for a decade. Blamed Chelsea supporters.

Calling out ignorance isn't being a prick. Just check your facts. It isn't hard.

They prevented other clubs from playing in Europe for 5 years (and Liverpool was banned for a sixth year).

Just curious, is this list cumulative?

AKA the "last 5 years" numbers are included in the "last 10 years" numbers

If so, that means Man City spent £98MM from 1992-2003, and £67MM from 2003-2008, and £641MM from 2008-2013?

Yes, cumulative.
103 mil this year
54 last
76 2011/12
155 2010/11
125 2009/10
128 2008/09

River Plate

Louis van Gaal started the building. Jupp Heynckes continued it and turned them into world beaters. Now they have Pep Guardiola, a guy that has won 17 trophies in 5 years as a manager with a chance for an 18th next month.

IT FELT LIKE A DECADE

(or so I've been told)

For the record, I don't think you were a prick for correcting me, because I'm a grownup that doesn't get all pissy if somebody points out a mistake that I made.

My recommendation is definitely try to watch a fair amount of games before deciding on a team to support. The premier league is by far the easiest league to get into because of the number of games on tv. Many of them are on earlier than college football in the fall so it's a fun thing to watch before football comes on. If you are on the west coast some of the games are too damn early but oh well.

I highly recommend catching EspnFC especially on Sunday nights. Lots of highlights from leagues all over and the dudes are pretty hilarious I think.

All the opinions on here are ridiculously biased towards there own teams of course. FWIW I "chose" Liverpool initially but after watching a good amount of games changed to Arsenal.

Another way you might fall into liking a club is by watching the World Cup this summer and seeing which players you end up liking a lot. It's pretty much impossible to not get into the World Cup if you have any interest in soccer at all. Once you see some players you like then find what teams they play for and follow them a bit to see if you like their club. Then you won't have to invest the time into watching a ton of club games to try and figure out who you like.

May 1977 (can't remember the exact date, getting old lol): I was 41 years old and down on my luck. I stumble into a filthy bar at 9AM after I had just been fired for tax evasion. I order 10 shots of the cheapest vodka available and look up the TV behind the bartender. It's Turlington City vs. AC Milan for the European Cup. Turlington City, the Fire Fairies, were an upstart club. They'd shocked their way to the finals on the back of brilliant tactics by The Hairless Coyote, Fabricio Bobo, but now Milan led them 4-0 with 20 minutes left.

It looked like the dream was dead. And that's when a hero emerged. The great Madagascar Sanchez, only 17 years old, decided it was getting late and it was time to shine. He had been the goalie for the first 70 minutes because The Hairless Coyote was playing possum. They subbed in a new goalie and Madagascar sprinted up the field, throwing his goalie shirt at the referee and whispering "watch this, scum bucket" into his ear (he got a yellow card). 2 minutes later, off a corner by future World Cup legend Varwin Vrankenvurter, Madagascar did the unthinkable. He jumped in the air, back to the goal, contorted his body, and kicked the ball over his head and into a net. Now, you know it as a bicycle kick. But in 1977, no one had ever seen it before. It was like watching Thomas Edison turn on a light bulb in 1350 or whenever the fuck he was doing his inventing bullshit. Even the AC Milan players were celebrating with Madagascar. The goalie who had just been scored on was crying tears of joy and audibly thanking Jesus.

There were 15 minutes left and it was a brand new game. And I don't just mean this particular game, I mean soccer as a whole was now a brand new game, a game that now involved motherfucking bicycle kicks. I cheered and cheered, as I'd found a new passion in life: Turlington City FC. They would go on to lose that game 5-1 and Madagascar Sanchez would retire from world football to become a construction foreman the following year, but it didn't matter, I was already hooked. I had a new lease on life and I managed to turn a negative into a positive by becoming a professional tax evader the following day. All thanks to Madagascar and the Fire Fairies. So do I have a suggestion for you, my friend? No, I have a demand: Put on a TCFC shirt and never look back!!

i went through this about 5 years ago. Finally settled on Liverpool...mainly because of "You'll Never Walk Alone" at Anfield...that's pretty damn cool, and the very cool red uni's. Downside is their Captain, Steven Gerrard is basically the Derek Jeter of English Soccer. Really good...remarkably scandal free for an EPL guy, same team forever...and wildly overrated by Liverpool fans.

The reason you will want to pick an EPL team is because it is so easy to watch their games...at least that's my opinion.

While we are on the topic, who does Bayern Munich have that explains how good they have been the past few years?

Phillip Lahm, considered (one of, if not the) best fullbacks in the world.

Franck Ribery who at 30 still has pretty good speed, and generally has great ball control while dribbling.

Bastian Schwienstieger, versatile midfielder, highly intelligent player.

Thomas Mueller, young, attacking midfielder. Very talented with room to improve.

Mario Gotze, young, great technique, should develop into a great player.

Toni Kroos, great technique and ability to distribute, potential to be scary good.

Arjen Robben, generally considered a world class douche bag, he also has a world class touch, good speed, dribbling, and crossing ability.

They have others developing very nicely, but those are, in my opinion, the top rated players on the team.

Not to post pad, but my wife and I fell into clubs based on our travels and experiences going to matches abroad; she landed on FC Barcelona and I landed on Bayern Munich.

leftcoast left out Alaba. vad is going to be PISSED.

haha, yeah. Alaba is great. Dante is coming into his own, too. Manuel Neuer is normally very good to (except of late)...I was trying to avoid listing the entire line up.
