He stamped down on a Korean trying to win the ball while being very late. I think a yellow could have done, but by the letter of the law, I think a red is appropriate.

just a clumsy and stupid tackle. yellow for me but its been a red all tournament and anytime you stomp at the ball like that you leave yourself open to seeing straight red.

edit: after seeing the replays, red looks to be the correct decision.

Oh wow, I didn't realize Kompany was out injured and is a doubt for their R16 game. With Vermaelen also injured, a yellow for Vertonghen and subsequent suspension would be an enormous loss.

Yeah, each time you watch it the challenge looks more and more red worthy.
