World Cup Knockout Rounds Thread (USMNT THREAD!) (nwt)

Just resaw Sneijder's strike - just perfect technique. It's extremely hard to drive a volley that low with that much power, takes perfect technique for it to not balloon over the bar. He absolutely crushed that.

It really was and in that moment, to hit it like that, when he had a second or two to think about it is so hard. Might have looked fairly simple to the casual viewer but what a hit.

And yet it isn't penalized in any other sport either. Basketball players throw their arms in the air every time they get touched, WRs as well, hockey players dive as often as soccer players. Soccer at least has a seldom used mechanism for punishing embellishment.

I've absolutely seen both a penalty and a dive called on the same play in hockey. Multiple times. I don't think it is utilized properly in the NHL right now, but it is better than nothing.

Had he not "flopped" and the foul wasn't called, would that not be unfair?

If it was legally a foul by the rulebook, then an offensive player has a right to make sure it gets called.

@Elko_B: Louis van Gaal: 'We had a bit of luck with the cooling break, so that I could implement plan B. That saved us.' (via NOS)

Thoughts? That's a major side effect of the water break.

Not even sure that was a foul. Do they consistently blow the whistle when a guy has one inch of his foot touched. Could have played on with absolute ease. So weak.

He absolutely could not have. Robben was jumping over the Marquez tackle when his foot was stepped on. He was going down regardless of whether he tried to play on. The exaggerated arm and body motion occurs after he is already falling.

It's a foul 100% of the time. Stupid defending to put yourself in that situation. Don't blame the offensive player for making sure the refs see it.

Zero embellishment on that play. I don't want to go too far with pierce knowing he has the most infamous faking an injury in nba history. But that play is not comparable to Marquez/robben

Marquez is still at fault. There was no reason to make that challenge. He was late and has to know that Robben will try to put it in the referee's hands.

Someone that is better with computer than me should post a series of youtubes demonstrating why exactly we hate El Tri. Might be helpful for these noobs.

There's no reason the coach should be allowed near the players during the break. It's not a timeout.

Exactly. Robben made a smart play.

But wouldn't they then just send messages with the trainers or whomever?
I'm thinking the "no coaching during water breaks" thing is pretty close to unenforceable. And I actually don't mind it.

Haha USA vs Mexico is a top 5 soccer rivalry in the world, possibly top 3, and people are questioning why we hate them
