True Detective on HBO

Give it another watch. My teenage son and I have watched it several times together and it seems to get better each time.

Oh I just meant "smashing failure" in terms of box office, where it took in very little money. I caught it on HBO one night and, while not hilarious, it does have a certain charm to it.

i'll take it happily but i don't see how season 2 will be anything but a let down no matter who they get

I'm ambivalent on Farrell. Sometimes he's on it. Sometimes he's meh. I just deeply hope he doesn't channel the characters he played in Minority Report or Phonebooth. Ugh.

This:
HBO describes the new season thusly: "Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder." Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him," while Vaughn has been cast as Frank Semyon, "a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner."

Does not sound anything like this:
Nic Pizzolatto... described the new season as being about "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system."

And based on what Season 1 dealt with, the description above seems like a let-down. Hope I'm reading too little into this so far. But fuck it, I know we're in for the sophomore slump. Still going to watch and hope we're happily disappointed.

And I guess with Farrell and Vaughn on-board, a female cop is now guaranteed.

If this was being called "a new series by the writers of True Detective, starring Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell," I feel like people would be pretty excited. Just being "True Detective season 2" makes expectations different.

So many cliches there. The reason the first season was good, in addition WH and MM, was that it was fresh. This sounds like every crime movie or series ever. The locale sounds boring. It would have been neat if they had gone to another obscure part of the country, but the winter probably prohibits filming in the northwest or great lakes areas, etc.

I think True Detective in Alaska would be awesome. Unique culture and history, including the Native Americans, awesome backdrops, but would have to be filmed in the summer and probably too costly. (Insert Palin joke at will).

The Fargo team doesn't seem to have too many issues filming in cold climes. Agree on Alaska. Maine also has dark gothic histories which would lend well to the show's flavor.

Saw something last night that Kiera Knightly may be in the running for the female lead. I like her a lot but I hope that's not true.

Here's how HBO's website describes Season 1:

In 2012, Louisiana State Police Detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart are brought in to revisit a homicide case they worked in 1995. As the inquiry unfolds in present day through separate interrogations, the two former detectives narrate the story of their investigation, reopening unhealed wounds, and drawing into question their supposed solving of a bizarre ritualistic murder in 1995. The timelines braid and converge in 2012 as each man is pulled back into a world they believed they'd left behind. In learning about each other and their killer, it becomes clear that darkness lives on both sides of the law.

The Season 1 summary above is definitely more interesting. It will also be weird that each episode in season 2 will have a different director....that could make it incoherent. Will still watch.

Love, love, love the F&F franchise. Lin is known for bringing his boys on board for almost all of his projects. My sources are telling me that you shouldnt be surprised to see Vin Diesel and Tyrese make cameos in True Detective Season 2.
