Rolling Stone Article on UVA rape culture

I'm not shocked about rape occurring or about a bunch of 18 year olds making poor decisions about not reporting for fear of social status, but it appalls me that 7 dudes (even if it wasn't 7, it was still multiple dudes) could conspire to do something so rotten. This isn't simply drunk awkwardness or drunk sexual aggression. It is a plan to trap a girl in the dark so she can't recognize faces and rape her multiple times. Kudos to the girl for doing her best to even survive such an episode in her head.

and either no one who knew about it disapproved or people knew and tacitly consented by not preventing it. disgusting.

UVA is a weird place. I had buddies there when I was at Wake, and I was friends with some guys in law school that were a member of these 'top tier' frats. They defs have a different culture there, and that isnt a compliment.

I feel sorry for this girl and every victim of sexual assault, but the sensationalized quotes in this article make it hard to believe. Kids, humans just dont talk and act like that.

Who the fuck says something like "are you worried about tarnishing UVA".

I can tell you the last thing on a self centered frat kid's mind is the integrity of the administration.

Douche UVA culture and all, though I am really disappointed in kids and humanity in general if frat kids would randomly gang rape a sober freshman who had just walked into a party, and then argue about their own reputation as they considered whether to take her to a hospital. As is the story with all of these cases, there are always conflicting stories and the truth is usually somewhere in between.

I can assuredly tell you that a rape culture certainly does not exist in Wake greek life, even in the 'top tier' frats. I was aware of 2 sexual assaults from my time at Wake, one that took place at an off campus house the year before I was a freshman, and one that occurred when I was either a junior or senior. In both cases, the culprits were convicted and the one in which the perp was a student was kicked out of school.

That sounds like a lot of people from UVa I've been around.

This social scene thing seems like the worst excuse I've ever heard

As someone mentioned, the frat house was vandalized by a group of students. Those students then wrote a letter to the school newspaper that was published. the letter demanded action. The part that killed me was that they signed it anonymously. They should have put their names on there if they wanted to be taken seriously.

Yeah, I think that the gist of the article is good, it really does seem like UVA has a problem, and it doesnt surprise me based on what I saw on campus there 10 years ago, but the article really reads as a geedy outsider expose that turns these people into caricatures, which hurts its integrity.

Rich brats are rich brats, but at least the out-of-state kids at UVA had to have been pretty decent human beings to get in. The idea that you walk on campus, join a frat and then start gang raping strangers, or helping people cover it up because you want to keep partying just doesnt compute.

i waited, and it was worth it

It's a huge school, I'm sure there's a social life to be had after helping a friend that was just a victim of a violent sexual assault

Hypothetically speaking, what happens if a bro comes out and confirms what is implied: gang-rape as a pledge initiation at this fraternity?

Jesus Christ what the hell is wrong with people? I have been drunk and high on anything and everything and partied harder than any UVA frat boy ever imagined, and raping someone never was on the docket of fun shit to do.

This x 1,000,000.

Why not? Football teams, Frats, actual street gangs...impressionable young men who are easily influenced become monsters to prove their loyalty, no matter who they have to destroy to get there...that's pretty much exactly how this works, isn't it?

Jesus Christ that article is beyond terrible. Fucking UVA.

I lived in a fraternity house and was a top officer my junior and senior year and if we had ever heard of any of that shit we would immediately have contacted the police and made sure the brother(s) in question were turned in. Ugh.

Decent chance they were victims of rape at that house not to mention they committed a crime themselves. Why would it benefit them to not be anonymous?

Pathetic.

No response to the implication that a pledge was forced to penetrate her with a beer bottle?

Do they need to get outside entities involved to kick brothers out of the frat for rape?

Hard to take them seriously until they publish names and kick them out. They clearly have the ability to find out who did it.

So an anonymous person can help craft a sensationalized article in a national news source and we need names released of the accused for what purpose?

I don't understand the male physiological aspect of rape. As in how do you get an erection from the prospect of placing your penis in the dry vagina of terrified or unconscious woman against their will. I know the "it's power, not sex" angle but it makes no sense to me. An erection is a sexual response. Putting aside all the horrific moral aspects of the crime of rape, which is tough to do, as I guy I cannot figure out how it is physically achieved. And gang rape? Men standing around with erections taking turns? A whole other level of what. the. fuck.

Like many others on this board I was in a frat at Wake. There were no secrets in the the chapter and I imagine that is true in most frats with any sort of close brotherhood. They know damned well who was involved.

I don't remember anything like this in our house in the late 90's. If a guy forced himself on a girl and we found out about it, we would have beat the shit out him, turned him in to UPD and thrown him out of the fraternity. That would have been automatic. And this was the late 90's...we even had the internet and cell phones. We were just guilty of dressing badly.

Im with ya in not relating to how dry vag sex even physically works, but gangbangs arent exactly an unpopular pornographic genre
