The Official OGBoards Running (and Cycling) Thread: (Insert Season Here)

Ran the ACC Fan Fest 5k this morning. Actually clocked in at 3.24mi. Thankfully the rain held off. Thought it would be a little more well attended, and Wake was woefully under represented.

This is the first time I've participated in the event, but it seemed to me the emphasis was on providing a party atmosphere for families rather than a first-class race. I don't know how it compares to the past 30 years, but I thought it was overall a good event.

I never said it was a bad event. Just average. It has had worse years.

I'm gonna be old-man-get-off-my-lawn here for a second: I love that children are active and running. That being said, I really dislike races with tons of children. I know this sounds totally whiny, but many don't have a sense for race etiquette so they'll dart in and out in front of people, stop on a dime to start walking in the middle of the street, etc. It is partly annoying but also, I get concerned for their safety. I'm a big old guy and while I can try to practice defensive running, I still get worried.

I suppose by moving up distances this becomes much less of an issue. Also, I recognize now that the Mistletoe race charity is fighting childhood obesity so it is really something I should have foreseen.

That's a fair point, but the motivation races provide for those kids to lead active lifestyles far outweigh the negatives of their participation.

I agree. I wonder about the feasibility of making a kid's race or kids and parents race. . . maybe have it start at 8:45.

I would think it would be relatively easy to have a wave start and just have the kiddos start 15 min later than the adults - especially on a 5k; that's plenty of time. Heck, even 10 minutes would solve a lot of that.

The ACC race had a Kids' run with the mascots. That said there was an 11 y/o girl that smoked the main 5k.

The top overall female in the 5k was 12 years old....I couldn't run 1 mile when I was 12.

I did our Turkey Trot 5 miler last weekend and it was olds and kids galore. After about mile of cutting in and out I just decided to have fun with it and not risk killing someone. You gotta understand which runs are races, and which ones are not.

On a more positive note I ran 10 today and the weather was glorious. Ended up knoncking out sub-8 minute miles and I finally feel like I might be rounding into shape for the Austin Marathon in February.

Someone explain how I never have a tail wind. This morning, on the way out of the neighborhood, wind in my face. On the way back in, wind in my face.

Why have you cursed me, Njord?

This weekend my wife and I drove down to Spartanburg to run One Epic Run, which is basically a 24-hour race on a 3.1 mile trail loop. It started raining early on and didn't really let up until mid-afternoon, so the trail was extremely muddy the entire time. I hardly ran at all and still managed to get in 18 miles, and my Mrs I/O did a 50K. Two people managed to get 100 miles and earn the belt buckle.

Here's a pic of the hoodie that everyone got, I think it's pretty badass

how'd those miles feel getting back to running post-ITB injury?

Actually I'm still recovering, the 18 that I did was almost all walking...I may have run about a mile total. It's definitely a lot better than it was a few weeks ago, though. When I had my appointment on Thursday, the doctor had me extend my leg and pressed down into what I thought was a ligament next to my kneecap, and it hurt really freaking bad. Turns out it was a huge knot in the muscle, and that might be what's causing a lot of my pain, so he did some dry needling and other stuff with it. Fun times.

damn, hope the recovery continues for you. I've been battling a tight psoas since coming back from the 40-miler. It's mild so still running on it and trying to stretch it consistently.

21:18 here in the Mistletoe 5k.

It was great to watch each of my family cross the finish line!

Saw her run at several of my daughter's XC meets this Fall. She is the future of girls distance running in W-S. Her father is a fine Deacon!

So, I signed up for the Napa to Sonoma half in July. A 10k is the furthest I have run, but I routinely run 3 miles or so at the gym. Any advice on how to train for this beast?

Find a training plan online. I recommend Hal Higdon. You should do some running outside because it's better and you will be better prepared. Enjoy the process. The distance shouldn't be an issue, but sometimes it will feel like it is.

Thanks. It's so freakin' cold out right now, but I need to sack it up and get out there. My neighborhood has crazy hills (like 40 degrees), so I guess that will help if I can navigate through them.
