Obama pushes for paid family leave

Yes, let's follow the european model and in a decade or so we can have soul crushing austerity measures to go with it.

I agree that family leave is important, but don't think it should be federally subsidized.

People said the exact same thing about Social Security and Medicaid. Our failures to fund them notwithstanding, they've led to generations of self-sustaining retirees without burdening businesses with enormous pension plans.

If you don't federally subsidize family leave, businesses pass of costs to consumers in ways eerily similar to tax subsidies.

they have? i guess i'll remind all the relatives and in laws with pension checks they get that arrive around the same time as their SS check.

The shift definitely took a long time, but you don't see nearly as many private sector jobs with pension plans anymore, is the point.

Taking productive aspects of a failing model isn't inherently bad. It just means you let someone else figure out the problems for you.

The idea of a pension outside of the military doesn't happen anymore.

Considering my wife is a federal employee who sits on her ass all day this is good news. The hardest part of our conversations regarding the timing of having our first child center on how the heck we are going to be able to manage in the weeks immediately following childbirth (she will be the bread winner shortly and we couldn't have her go to unpaid status - judge as you may but student loan payments are no joke). We don't have any family within 5 hours and since she just started her job in July she has very little accrued leave/sick time - in fact she used all she had built up already to be with the family when my dad got real sick and passed away. This probably could speed up our having kids by a year or two - we are already both mid 30's so the clock is ticking if we want to help the economy by growing our family.

Congratulations. It looks like you all overcoming real life challenges in order to be contributing members of our society.

suffice to say 2&2 wouldn't hire either one of you

That is a pretty enormous qualification. Why don't we just give everybody as much money as they want?

That has nothing to do with social security, it has to do with the fact that defined pensions have proven to be an unsustainable business practice.

I think it has to shifting the burden from employer to employee while corresponding with the transition to workers not just staying with one company for thirty years and calling it q day anymore.

Yeah, heaven forbid that individuals be responsible for the burden of their own retirement as opposed to their employers.

You're a weird dude, 2&2. You admit that the theory is about shifting from employer to employee responsibility, but also hate SS/Medicare.

well this got out of hand quickly.

anyone questioning the euro comparison because of greece/spain needs to look closer at germany and the scandinavian countries. in norway, for instance, the mother gets a year off and the father gets 6 months. 6 weeks is a far cry from that.

also we already have state mandated maternity leave in cali. suck it loosers.

I don't have a problem at all with defined contribution plans. I wasn't even making an argument, you just like to be counter to everyone on here. Someone could say the sky is blue and you'd argue about atmospheric condition.

2&2's vile response any time women in the workplace or maternity leave comes up is pretty amazing. dude has a serious problem with working women.

I'm so glad I don't work for 2&2. The office environment must be magical.
