Recommend good stuff you've seen on Netflix streaming

If you like music, watch them. They aren't bad, and a few of the eps are pretty good. My problem with it is they went to all these towns, found some cool studio, then proceeded to record a song that said nothing about the town and sounded nothing like the town or studio. All the songs basically got the Butch Vig treatment. The lyrical treatment most of the songs got was laughable, with a few random lines inserted from interviews in the show.

I liked the DC one quite a bit, mostly because I remember some of that stuff. I also enjoyed the New Orleans ep, and a bit of NYC.

Was just about to post this. Watched the entire first season this past weekend.

It's great. The younger sister and the Duplass bro do a great job in addition to Tambor.

Last three or four episodes got a little too soap-opera-y, but I'll watch next season. It's kinda like Parenthood with more sex.

Finished Peaky Blinders and Honourable Woman this weekend (end of last week since I was sick). Almost done with the first season of Rectify. Peaky Blinders definitely picked up, though I thought part of the ending of the 2nd season was forced and didn't match well. I just didn't hook into Honorable Woman -- there was one episode that was cringe-worthy dialog-wise. I wanted to care most about Stephen Rea's character, but in the end, I just didn't hook into any of them. I actually liked the Worricker series better, even though it was much lighter.

Guess I should check out Transparent, though I'm still a little bitter about it getting the Amazon series nod over the Whit Stillman show which I wanted to watch so so bad.

I liked the Seattle one too. But yes, DC and New Orleans were the best. The songs did rather suck. It was an ambitious project and results were kind of all over the place. I was in from the first trailer, myself, but that's because I'm in to that kind of stuff (recording and producing, etc.). But it did fall short in many respects.

From Grantland:

In fact, it’s not clear if Amazon is even really listening to the feedback it so zealously solicits: According to Goodman, Transparent was the lowest-rated pilot in its entire season. The truth is, Amazon isn’t much interested in what casual viewers think at all.

ETA: later text-note: God, I wish Whit Stillman’s charming The Cosmopolitans had gone to series instead of being banished to “more scripts have been ordered” limbo.

Speaking of Amazon series- happy to see that they picked up Red Oaks for a full season. Great coming of age in the 80s comedy produced by Steven Soderbergh and directed by David Gordon Green.

If you like documentaries and music:

Don't read anything about it, just watch Last Days Here. Now.
Then watch A Band Called Death, and don't read about this one either.
Then watch Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me
Then watch Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage
Then watch Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train A' Comin'
Then watch Beware of Mr. Baker
Then watch The Punk Singer
Then watch half of Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey (half is enough to get the whole story, unless you want to have Journey songs in your head for days afterward)

I was going to add a really good music doc that I saw recently to this list, but couldn't remember the name of it. So I looked it up. It was Last Days Here.

Just finished up season 2 of The Fall ....damn, that shit got real!! Fantastic storytelling.

Have watched them all except Rush and The Punk Singer. Artifact is worth watching too.

Same. Have a few storyline quibbles that seemed sort of cliche for this show to use but it was still good. Be interesting to see if they get a 3rd season

I'll second or third or whatever the Rush one. I've been a huge fan most of my life, but it completely changed the way one of my buddies thought about them and now he is all about them. Just a lot of love with those dudes, it's great to see. And they fucking shred.

Hot off the press: The Interview is now available. Watching it now...

It's not on Netflix, but if you have Sundance Channel OnDemand and you haven't seen it already, then I would recommend checking out The Cooler. Silly, off-beat rom com that doesn't take itself seriously at all. Great cast.

Get Shorty

+ 1 Always a good one. I watched it again recently as well. Travolta, Hackman and DeVito are awesome. The young and thin(ner) James Gandolfini with long hair is a far cry from Tony Soprano.

My wife, kids and I watched a documentary Friday night called Serving Life, about a volunteer prison hospice program at Angola Prison in Louisiana. It is very powerful and moving. I highly recommend it. http://www.npr.org/2011/10/19/141505983/serving-life-prisoners-find-humanity-in-face-of-death

And as I recall features Maria Bello's tabes?
