Danny Manning Credibility Watch

But on the good side I'm thrilled with our rebounding margin and defense in general. Feel pretty confident that we will be able to win once the talent level increases. All in all I'm happy with the season so far.

Substitution patterns are bad because the talent level and depth are so dreadful. I mean honestly it's a struggle to have a starting five without 3-4 of the players having glaring weaknesses. So is it a surprise we struggle when we go to an abysmal bench? I can't blame him for not being able to put together a decent second team, but that's not really on him IMHO.

Sure. But we can blame him for the backups he puts in and when. There's no excuse for some of those lineups. And plenty of teams run 7-8 man rotations, some with far better depth than us.

Didn't Duke only run a 6 deep one of the years they won a Natty?

I think Tech under Cremins in the 90s ran a six man rotation and got to the Final Four. Now that's probably a lot easier to do with Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott and Brian Oliver as your core rather than CMM, Devin Thomas and the Greek Deac...

If playing 9 or 10 guys this year leads to a significant increase in development for next year, then I'm all for it.

It's also confusing that it seems as though most are complaining that we crumble down the stretch, so our solution is to cut our depth? I can't imagine that would help our late game issues.

We're running the risk of Moon changing his mind again about Manning here...

only if you think tired legs are why we collapse down the stretch

Nah. I don't think that's the problem. But adding tired legs to the laundry list can't help.

I'd like to see Wilbekin start getting the last shot or at least some shots at the end of games. I understand he's had a heavy work load on the defensive end recently, but Clemson was the beginning of a much easier stretch of guards, and he is our guard of the future. His brother has ice water in his veins, maybe he does too.

I'm genuinely interested to see how Manning handles this problem.

I think there would be less of a stretch to crumble down if the end of the bench got fewer minutes early in games.

It's pretty funny to think that if we'd hit one more free throw against Syracuse and Hudson had hit that open late 3 against Clemson the entire line of posts questioning Manning would be non-existent.

When I think of error prone players, Scooter Banks and Trent Strickland come to mind. Of course, this team needs a star player that can make winning shots at crunch time. Ish got good at this as a senior so there is still hope for Codi and Devin.

I think I was listening on the radio and not watching at the time, but didn't we play pretty well with Andre in the first half?

You mean to tell me that if we'd won 2 more games folks would be more positive?!!?

Obviously the manner in which we lost to Clemson is leaving a very bitter taste in everyone's mouth. It surely will be a challenge for the players to rebound in a positive fashion as well with a tough turn-around going out on the road again for FSU with little practice time to correct a few things.

I definitely would like to see DM substitute less early on if the starting 5 or first 6 are getting the job done, we're building a lead and Devin isn't in early foul trouble. I certainly understand trying to keep DT fresh for the 2nd half regardless of foul trouble so I can live with 2-4 mins of Andre at the 5. But the problem is more with the poor combination of players after getting past the 6th player. But as many have stated, when you have poor depth, you will have issues with your rotation. However, I am as surprised as any that Coach Manning hasn't decided that he hates certain lineups such as Madison, Crab, Dinos, Leonard & Andre for instance.

Perhaps too many of us are too accustomed to certain players' flawed games and it won't really matter as the depth minutes have to come from somewhere. But I absolutely hate having MJ on the floor without CMM as it becomes to obvious that we're trying to work the ball into the low post when DT is on the floor. I know Codi needs to get some rest, but as good a rebounder as he's shown to be, I think he should play at least 36-38 mins per game barring foul trouble. At least go 3 guards with Wilbekin getting a rest while Crab is out there to complement MJ and CMM to keep defenses somewhat honest on the perimeter. Unfortch that also means being a bit small and slow on D as you would like to have Dinos in the game as well since MJ can't shoot at all and CMM's range is suspect.

Talk about your conundrums! That's why I'm trying to not over-critique DM in his first year as he may deep down realize the experience gained and development achieved now far outweighs the extra 2 or 3 wins you might eek out otherwise. The future is NOT now unfortunately. Just the way it happens to be thanks to Bz-tard.

As much as I hate all of the losses we have had, this team is remarkably different than last years team. Odd that our record is worse, but everytime we play (sans recent UNC game) I'm really enjoying watching the game. And their play is not terribly different from home to visiting this year as it was last year. Last year you knew if the team was away, there was going to be a blow-out by 30 points.

In my hearts of hearts, I knew we were going to lose to Clemson at the last minute. In a way, its a more painful loss than all those losses last year by 30. Because there is this hope they will squeak it out. All I know is at some point this season, they are going to get on the good side of a win away from home, and my neighbors will be calling in noise complaints about me.

I can tell Manning is coaching these guys. I don't know anything about recruiting classes, assuming he can bring some people in that are of good caliber, I'm really looking forward to next year, and keeping some hope of a fun ACC run this year.

The only folks I'm disappointed at are the Wake fans in the W-S area. That UNC game, the stadium looked easily 30% UNC fans. I understand the reasons why, but that is absolutely pathetic.
