Hanes Middle School sits on top of a pool of toxic waste

The write up below is a bit more in depth. The problem is chlorinated ethylenes...PCE, TCE and 1,1-DCE. It's hard to tell what they consider "acceptable" as far as air quality is concerned. The standards for these are all over the place. Doesn't sound like a good idea to put kids on top of chemical waste though. Whose idea was it to build a new school there?

If you look at the map of the plume, Lowrance would actually go on the more concentrated part.

My daughter goes there. We're making her continue to go so it does not jeopardize our lawsuit. Daddy's new retirement plan!!!

I've volunteered a ton of time over there from STEM nights to summer camps. I dug 3ft holes out near the playground area to set posts for solar panels that we donated and installed for the kids to use for various projects.

This is a terrible situation. All of my experiences there have been positive. I'm always amazed at how smart those kids are. I hope the tests come back at acceptable levels AND they relocate the whole school.

I think that would be the ideal outcome. Don't know where they'd relocate to. Wiley isn't at capacity and is centrally located and next to Brunson, the HAG elem. school. So that has potential. Hill is vacant I believe but way over on South Side. I think the old Downtown Middle School charter has closed but I don't know if the school system owns that bldg. or not.

It's a great school, but we've had some issues so far. One of the 6th grade math teachers is in only her 2nd year of teaching (first in this district) and she's awful. Gets called out by students so frequently for getting things wrong that she flips out and kicks them out of class because her ego can't handle it. Aside from that, we like the teachers and the principal.

How the fuck does a teacher get called out for doing sixth grade math wrong? What the hell is even sixth grade math-- long division? We didn't even do algebra until 8th grade when I was in school.

Well, in her defense the program is two years accelerated, so that would be 8th grade math.

You wouldn't believe how smart some of these kids are. My 12 year old asked me if he could learn how to program while he is stuck at home the next couple weeks, on top of his normal homework load that teachers will be sending out still.

The voracious appetite for knowledge among these little jedi is amazing!

Agreed. Go watch an NAL match. It will make you feel really dumb.

Peaking too early. In five years he'll be smokin j's outside of the high school.

Where did these chemicals come from? Was there some sort of manufacturing on the site?

company behind the school on Indiana. Ilco/Kaba? Made/makes locks and keys.
