As soon as this weekend.

Borders to Shut Down

If you are near a Borders I suggest going by once they go into liquidation. We went by one that went out of business a few months ago and got some AMAZING deals.

I always hate it when any book store closes, but especially when it encompasses as many individual stores as Borders

Amazon and e-readers are only part of the problem. This country is under assault by the forces of the illiterate.

I slinged espresso at the Borders at Thruway for a hot minute. Makes me sad, but they were a horribly run company that didn't adapt to new technology at all.

Maybe I am an old fogey but I just don't think the physical book is going to go bye bye like the CD did. I have tried reading a book on my iPad and I just don't like it. There is nothing like holding a real book IMO. I can't be alone on this.

Kindle is so, so awesome. I resisted it for awhile but no more. Read it at the pool yesterday and had absolutely no issues with glare. Getting new books delivered instantly to your device is amazing.

reading books on ipad or especially on a freaking nook is way ghey.

That said, I've always been pretty underwhelmed by Borders and B&N. Unless you are reading the typical bestseller mystery/romance/politics schlock, they usually dont have it in stock. At that point Amazon is going to destroy them, and they have.

its pretty hard to survive when your options are

$9.99 Kindle book
12.99 physical book from Amazon with no sales tax
$18.99 physical book from Borders

you are only going to get so many impulse buyers want a book right now in physical form

Especially when many have Amazon Prime which has free shipping.

I have always been pleased Barnes and Noble; I have been less pleased with Borders. Borders always seemed to have less merchandise and often did not have the books that I needed, whereas Barnes and Noble did. At the same time, Borders was often $1-2 more expensive. Shopping on a student's budget, I only went to Borders if I was in Thruway and needed a book immediately. Normally I would just drive over to Barnes and Noble or just order off of Amazon.

Sad. I did go over to the Greensboro Borders and got some pretty sweet deals when they were liquidating, but I will miss the Thruway Borders. I always liked the B+N ambiance better than Borders, but Thruway is closer to my house so it was usually my first stop if I wanted to browse. However, it definitely does make it hard to compete when selling books for the cover price (on many occasions, even with the 40% off Borders coupon, prices would still be cheaper on Amazon).

I read a Wall Street Journal article a few months back that predicted something like a 90% reduction in retail bookshelf space over the next 10 years. I guess that just shows the massive impact of e-books...sad. I actually bought a nook color recently, but am using it mainly as an Android tablet and as an e-reader for some of my textbooks/some review books because I really don't want to carry 50 lbs of books around with me. However, all my "for fun" reading is with "real" books. I get tired of reading off a screen and enjoy just actually having a paperback in my hand.

Library, homie.

it also doesn't help the Winston location to have Edward McKay across the street

Hard to shed a tear when the Edison puts the candlestick makers out of business. Props to Amazon and Barnes and Noble for moving with the market.

I've started reading books on the iPad. I don't normally read outside or at the beach so I don't run into many problems.

One thing I hate is how BN is way more expensive in store than online. I had a gift card and wanted some cookbooks and since I was bored I went into the store and was disappointed to find that each of three books I wanted were selling for the cover price and each one had a wrinkled or ripped dust jacket (and they only had one copy of each). Saw they were way cheaper on their site plus free shipping so I think I'm done with these huge stores.

+1. I have a Kindle that I'll probably use for travel, but I still love having the physical books. (Plus, it just feels wrong to read classics on a screen, even though you can get the entire Shakespeare collection for $.99.)

physical books > kindle/nook

at least that is my thought. I like the feel of a book. I don't want to stare at a computer screen all day.

You aren't staring at a Computer screen with a regular Nook or Kindle. I have both a Kindle and iPad and doubt I'll ever read a book on the latter.
