Remaining Borders Stores to liquidate

Makes sense since digital copies come with DVD/Blu-rays.

I wish I could buy a hard copy of a book and get the e copy for free. Then I could get an e-reader and take that on trips, instead of having to lug around a box of books, like I'm doing now.

This is one of the only things I don't like about ebooks because I still have a shitload of hard copy books that I've been given and haven't read. Other than that, Kindle FTW.

I hope that B&N stores don't start disappearing though. Even though I like hardcopy books, I also enjoy wasting time at bookstores/studying there.

Do you think the demise of the big brick and mortal book stores re-opens the local markets for the small neighborhood bookstore?

Hard to say, but still does not change my satisfaction of one new game plan coming in and destroying the one that put my choice of preference out of business.

i think people are grossly overestimating how awesome local bookstores are.

A) aside from cool used or antique books, they have a shitty selection
B) like record stores and auto parts stores, they're generally manned by faux-elitists
c) hanging out in a B&N or Borders and checking out some books > standing awkwardly in a tiny aisle in a shop w/ no AC

For my part, I would still rather shop at a local place than support big chain stores. I am willing to put up with a bit smaller selection for the satisfaction of helping a local business owner, putting money back into my community and also usually getting 100 times better customer service.

I hate the Cloverdale HT, and that parking lot sucks. The best HT around is at Country Club and Peace Haven.

I'd go to the Robinhood/Peace Haven location while at school and always liked it. Hit up the Cloverdale one when I worked at Piedmont Plaza because it was convenient but have recently switched to Thruway because the parking lot is sooooo much less of a clusterfuck. I couldn't park and walk in the door of the Cloverdale lot without getting angry at someone being an idiot.

if porn stores can still stay in business, i'm sure we'll won't see bookstores go away in their entirety

Yeah, Circuit City made the same complaint about the internet and then it came out how bad they treated employees and didn't give workers raises who eventually jumped to Best Buy.

I heard an NPR story yesterday that said this may be good for local bookstores.

buckets makes an interesting point (kinda). How come there was never a Barnes and Nobles or Borders for porn? Seems like the local neighborhood porn store remains the model.

I liked how Borders had kiosks in the store where you could look stuff up yourself. B&N doesn't have this and you have to interact with someone or stand in line to find out where are book might be.

Local bookstores are much better at having book-related events (author's coming to speak, mainly) and contributing to the community through tax revenue or supporting local authors/poets.

I don't think they're going to survive as they are against the likes of Amazon, but they bring way more to the table than the big box stores.

uh, you think local bookstores contribute more local tax revenue/jop opportunities than a borders/BN? what?

you have a point as far as promoting local authors (signings/readings) but every 'big chain' store has a sizeable section filled with local or at least regional books/authors.

I don't want to rally against locally-owned businesses. I definitely make it a point to visit indie bookstores when I go on vacation or pass through a town. I'm just going to miss our Borders (we don't have a BN) b/c it brought a lot to the table that local stores just don't have and don't care to.

You've stumbled upon your long-awaited business opportunity, Ph. Good luck.

Every time I go into a B&N or Borders, I wonder how they make any money. Seems like most "customers" are simply loitering and doing nothing more than getting free interwebs and/or drinking coffee.

bet there is more profit in a cup of coffee than your average book

your link is from february

That was from the first round of store closings earlier this year. The rest of them that survived the first cut are now closing. There will no longer be any borders stores.

ah, you're right.

i gleaned the link from a post discussing the closings from a couple days ago. didn't notice the link was old.

carry on.
