Richmond @ Wake Forest - 7pm - ESPN3 - Prediction/Game Thread

1. One of the worst substitution patterns I've seen in a while. Rarely, if ever, did DT and JC see the court together. Could've been a strong high-low duo against the zone.
2. O'Brien has no business sniffing a DI basketball court. Did the ol catch-a-pass and throw it right back to the passer routine. Posters here could score on him.
3. If Dinos isn't knocking down shots, he's a liability. Can't defend, can't box out, and makes sloppy passes.
4. 14 missed FTs and 20 TOs will lose you a game every time.

All that being said, love Crawford and Collins. And as a Yung Crab enthusiast, I'm optimistic once we return two starters.

This is a good post.

I think we need to be a bit patient in terms of evaluating the freshmen. These critiques seem especially unreasonable.

I don't know if we have the pieces to run the pick-and-roll, to be honest. Not every point guard is comfortable operating in PnR situations. Codi is a really capable player in the pick-and-roll, but that was it. PnRs constituted just 10% of our overall possessions last year vs. 21.6% of Codi's.

We knew that lacking shot creators would hurt us without Codi. Bryant showing some potential in this area is great (and I have no doubt that his instincts will improve as he becomes more comfortable playing at this level), but the reality is that creators open up the floor for everyone else. With our current talent and experience deficits, there is a lot that we simply cannot do without a proven creator on the floor.

That being said, I'm pretty disappointed in how Dinos and Greg have looked so far. Solid numbers from both tonight, but their instincts/awareness are far too low for players with that much experience.

I tell you one thing we can comment on that is the piss poor coaching I just witnessed. A complete fucking joke. The lineups are inexplicable. No defense. Seriously why is Collins not playing more, and why would Obrien ever be in the game?

Danny Manning is not getting it done. Seriously. The first thing you do in coaching is put your best players on the floor. He can't even do that.

We had one freaking steal all game. That and their shooting percentage are an indication of the defense we played. No intensity at all - just going through the motions really.

of course it's manning's fault. i have no idea what he's doing playing them so much.

eta: espn's will show minutes later, not during or immediately after.

It's the most baffling personnel decision I can think of from a Wake hoops coach. At least Ammo had a reputation as a three point shooter. Van Horn is like playing four on five on offense. If you look at the box score without minutes, you think he played 10 minutes at the most.

How many times a game do we turn the ball over forcing a pass to Thomas that gets jumped?

If Dinos is forcing shots, he's a major liability on offense.

I agree with everybody that the substitution patterns make no sense. I think that our lack of talent has more of an effect on our team than simply our bench depth, however, and I hope that Manning is trying to address this by playing guys who (seem to? must? meh) know the offense. Regardless, something isn't working and whether the staff is able to figure it out before Maui is going to tell me a lot about their potential moving forward. We have some intriguing pieces and are/should be good enough to regularly win games like tonight's game, but the whole is sorely lacking.

The only thing that I can think of is the fact that the walk-ons are better at executing whatever offense our staff is trying to run. It's not working out at all because it's equivalent to playing 3/4 vs. 5, but that's my sense from seeing just how out-of-step we have looked when we're playing five scholarship players. Hopefully, Crawford's improvement translates into us having someone to run our offense, rather than the weird "by committee" set-up we seem to be using now.

Are people seriously talking about Manning not being the guy already? Some of you are ridiculous. Do you not realize that our best player is out and another starter from last season is out? Manning has to put together a game plan that includes playing two walk-ons and he has recently said that Devin isn't 100% because of his back. Seven true scholarship players without CMM and Crab. It's been one seasons and FOUR games, ome of you need to calm down.
Also, as a response to the person who said Dinos' play is understandable because he's a sophomore, that's a terrible excuse. He played God awful defense all game and had weak turnovers in crunch time. Crawford's turnovers will go away when he gets a few more game under his belt. But to say you're almost already "off the Manning bandwagon" after a season and four games is just plain idiotic.

Absolutely inexcusable coaching:

TVH played 28 minutes
McClinton (who had one of his best halves in college) played 22
Dinos played 31 (inexcusable due to his defense and shot selection)
Moore 6
Collins 12

1. They fronted us all game, stop lobbing it in there, they are going to steal it or double immediately.
2. Play Collins and DT at the same time.
3. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TAKE OUT TVH AND DINOS WHO ARE GETTING BEAT BACK DOOR EVERY SINGLE PLAY
4. Teach the team how to rotate defensively in a zone or don't play it.
5. Get your hands up on a closeout. I don't care how far away you are away from the shooter, never, EVER, just stand there with your hands down.

Crawford is a MAN and can play off the ball, which will be good once Codi gets back.
Collins is really, really good and can score inside. He is going to be a force to be reckoned with inside over his career.
Dinos needs less minutes.
McClinton needs more minutes, because even if he is slow on defense I guarantee he isn't worse than TVH, and he is certainly a better scorer and rebounder.
We scored 80 points when 75% of the time we had a guy who didn't score out there.

I think losing has become acceptable in WF men's bb. Winning doesn't seem to be the goal. Maybe we are expecting a trophy for participation. We need Clawson's attitude on our coaching staff.

Just because the best player is out and a starter is out doesn't mean that you can just excuse him altogether.

The walk-ons have to play, but they don't have to play 34 minutes out of 200 when Collins and Moore (two scholarship players) play 18 total.

Collins with 12 minutes again. He is probably already better than Dinos.

I'm disappointed Manning spent no time figuring out how to use Devin, Dinos, and Collins in the same lineup.

People won't necessarily talk a lot about it, but Dinos needs less minutes. He is really, really, really bad on defense. Slow laterally and also doesn't rotate well, and when he does it is almost always late. Devin got right in his face after another back door cut he let by him.

Collins only had 12 minutes? Jesus Christ, that is awful.

It felt like he was in there a lot more than 12 minutes, so that surprised me too. Felt like 18-20 at least. Maybe because he is so productive when he is in there.

Yes. That was a pathetic coaching job tonight. He did nothing in end of game situations. The whole point is the walk ons shouldn't be in there. No intensity on defense, and none from the coach. Maybe since we are young he should use some of his timeouts and refocus. I am unpleased. Yes.

Manning has shown the ability to find 3 star recruits that have four star potential and some low 4 star guys that are better. That's it. I have seen a lack of brain power with in game situations over the past two years.

I don't see it at all.

This. He also does not seem to understand what to do on offense.
