Republicans for POTUS, 2016 Edition

This will be the first time I've ever said something in support of Ben Carson, but if you'd shown me that video without prepping me that he pronounced Hamas like hummus, I never would have noticed. I certainly wouldn't have confused it for the chickpea dish, rather just thought it to be an imprecise pronunciation that many Americans would make, even presidential candidates.

That's fair but it's still a mispronunciation that anybody who follows the news wouldn't make.

What struck me from that clip was that he seemed like he was reading that speech for the first time ever.

Cruz has to be a little concerned. Was inevitable that Carson was going to collapse, but probably starting too early for Cruz. Preference would be a week or two before Iowa, but now gives Trump enough time to whack Cruz if his numbers grow too much. Cruz appears to be the only one still in the race who could be Trump's VP, but Trump is more concerned about not taking any losses than taking the long view.

Everybody at that conference knows more about the Middle East than Carson and reading a third grade book report made that abundantly clear.

I mean, if it was just some random schmuck off of the street it would be whatever, but this is a man running for president. Hamas has been part of the American political lexicon for almost 30 years. He should know how to pronounce it and the fact that he can't correctly do so is concerning.

When I heard it this morning, my first thought was "I'm not sure what he's talking about. OH, he's talking about Hamas."

Wonder how non-supporter Jews feel about Trump's comments.

I suppose I'm so nonplussed due to lowered expectations for Carson. Something like "Hamas is the group that bribed Pontius Pilate to condemn Jesus" is the sort of thing that would make me take note. Accentuating the wrong syllable? Meh.

Oh and for the record I completely agree that a legit candidate should properly pronounce it.

Exactly.

This is what I just posted about that speech on my FB.

"That speech you give in class when you didn't study ahead of time. "Hummus." LOLOLOLOLOL"

Amazing that the GOP may nominate a ticket that would minimize Hillary's biggest liabilities: likability (Cruz) and honesty (Trump and Carson). GOP would hold their nose and not overtly trash Cruz, but people from high school, college, and law school won't hold back. Princeton and Harvard aren't exactly conservative bastions. Will be hard for Cruz to balance an elite background with just folks populist policies.

It really is amazing to see/read just how deeply people who know him hate Ted Cruz.

Wait, what? This is exactly the kind of thing we've come to expect from Carson.

Sorry, but I don't understand what you don't understand, so I may not be able to answer "what?" but I'll try.

Lowered expectations for Carson with regards to things like world politics means that when he mispronounces a major player in the Middle East, I don't find it surprising. In other words, it's exactly the kind of thing I've come to expect from Carson.
