Snow

Minimal accumulation in boone last night but the roads were horrible getting home from work. We just moved here. Hoping they do better with snow management going forward. Got spoiled living in new Hampshire for six years. Those cats could clear the damn roads

DC still slated to get pounded. NC still a tough call - I'd say 8" for Winston. Definitely stay safe tomorrow everyone. I would expect widespread power outages, especially in areas where it ends up being a large ice event.

They're good about the main roads around campus but that's it. When we got the three 20" snows around five years ago I had to park my car downtown and walk to and from it for a few days.

That's not very reassuring.
This area gets enough weather they should know how to treat the roads.

This. The roads were actually really, really bad last night. DC usually sucks when it comes to snow, but last night was not a "light dusting" like people are saying.

Yeah we had a basketball game near Shirlington and they didn't cancel it in time. The entrance to the gym has a hill to get down to the parking garage and cars were just sliding down it sidewise. Even with four wheel drive I barely made it back up - then watched a bus slide down Columbia Pike and hit the bus stop. Luckily Alexandria had already pre-treated some roads near my house so once I was out of Arlington it was fine, but there were something like 14 accidents reported on my normal routes home. One way in particular was listed by Google as +28 minutes (on a 12 minute total trip time).

DC has a unique combination of imported northerners used to treated roads who think they can drive on anything plus imported southerners who see a snow flake and put their flashers on, drive 10mph max, and panic at every wheel spin.

Yeah seems to me people in the North are only "good" at driving in the snow because the roads are well treated and not very dangerous at all.

Yeah, I don't know if it was the fact that everyone is freaking out about this weekend and didn't consider last night or what. I actually didn't realize it was supposed to snow yesterday until someone mentioned it at lunch. Luckily we were home before anything started and didn't have plans to leave the house. But co-workers were talking about the cars all along 66 this morning. And schools closed and what not.

At least the majority of this big one will be over the weekend and hopefully people won't be venturing out? Yesterday seemed like most of the problem was people trying to get out to stock up for tomorrow.

Winston-Salem is covered under the Blacksburg NWS, but the Greenville Spartanburg NWS is predicting for us in Davie County, close to 7.5" of snow and between .25" and .4" of ice.

Virginia declared a state of emergency earlier this morning. I would expect NC to do the same if they haven't already so that state funds can be moved more easily to assist local issues.

NAM run puts over an inch of freezing rain across most of Southern NC and an absolutely crippling beatdown on Charlotte. NC is looking at potentially historic ice damage. This could get really, really bad for large portions of NC.

Half an inch of ice will cause widespread power outages. Over an inch will be devastating.

So maybe the Cardinals' flight will get delayed. PRAYERS UP

NAM puts 30"+ in DC with localized areas above 4' and almost reaching 5'. It can overrun on totals at times and I suspect it did a bit here but some parts of the region will see over 3 feet.

We've always been told .25" will bring down power lines. I cant imagine 4x that.

My one PSA for this, if your power goes out and you are using an auxiliary heating source, make sure you have a working CO detector.

Fuck you, Numbers

mmmm gonna hit up the store at lunch today.

Gotta make sure I've got booze and batteries for my flashlight. #necessities

we're supposed to drive to our in-laws' house in Lynchburg tonight and I'm not worried about the drive down, but am really on the fence if we'll get stuck there Sunday or not. It's not the end of the world if we stay another day, and they have stocked up on food and booze whereas we've gotten nothing for our apartment here, and I've seen pics of barren stores here in the city.

If your options are:

1) [Potentially] Being stranded in Lynchburg
2) Anything else

You go with 2 every damn time.
