The 2016 Panthers Thread: Keep Pounding

I'd rather use that money on OLine. With KK and Starr, decent DEs should get pressure.

Charles Johnson should fire his agent. Probably the most talked about attribute of this draft is how deep it is at D-Line. It seems like Johnson's agent failed to realize it's a buyer's market for D-Linemen. That and the fact that CJ didn't have a good season.

Gotta think it's doubtful. I'm not convinced he's much more than a rotation pass rusher going forward.

I think it's more likely we sign somebody else in the $6-8M range and draft 2 DE.

These guys always gotta have some kind of motivation (see Deangelo, Smitty) and sticking it to your former team is certainly one. Unlikely to me he'd resign, because seems like they would have been able to figure out a restructure and I hope they gave him the courtesy of at least discussing that before cutting him

His time might be over here, but once the market is tested he might find the Panthers' offer more reasonable. especially with a shot at a title run. Of course some team is probably going to go all in with him playing 90% of the snaps at a Pro Bowl level and overpay him, but maybe not.

He had two sacks last year and is injury prone. I'm glad we cut him instead of restructured its the right move. Gettlemagic.

Except he's never actually been to the Pro Bowl. He has never been a Pro-Bowl level player. He has always been a mediocre player who duped Hurney into giving him the worst contract in pro sports the second it was signed. Unless you get him back on a minimum contract or slightly above that, good riddance.

Would be awesome to cut him then re-sign him as a gman vet special

He had a five year run where he averaged a little better than ten sacks a season - that's much better than mediocre.

How realistic is it that he stays healthy though? He is exactly the kind of player you should walk away from, and the kind of guy Hurney would have over payed for.... Twice.

Totally agree with this. Gman knows that you have to cut the expensive, aging vets and bring in youth and cheaper vets. We'll be fine. This means they likely have bought into Ealy as a starter next season and as Ph said, we're likely drafting a couple DEs. With it being an extremely deep position in the draft, I'm not convinced we go 1-2, maybe 1 and 3 or 2 and 3 @ DE.

Draft got a whole lot more interesting though as whoever we get will need to contribute right away. Wonder if we'll target Mario Williams as well.

Meh, sacks in a vacuum are overrated. He made 10 plays all year, whoopty doo. He isn't good against the run, doesn't get a ton of pressure apart from the sacks, and hasn't shown himself to be a defensive team leader despite his perceived stature. If you get him on a low contract, sure. But anything more than that and let him be someone else's problem.

To be clear, I wasn't making that point as a reason to justify keeping him at present. I was just pointing out that he had some very productive years for us.

The Panthers social media is putting out CJ farewell stuff like he's not coming back.
